Right my G/F's stepdad has apparently signed up to volunteer to be on call for the NHS for 2 days a month.

What he said he has to do: complete training to become a qualified NHS blood carrier, then on the two days he states he can be on call, if he gets a call from a hospital in the local area, he will have to go to the hospital pick up blood and take it to a crash scene/hospital/other place.

Apparently this can HALF! your insurance, anyone heard of this or doing it? I've done a quick search on the NHS website but cannae find nothing about it!

Seemed like a good thing to do (apart from the fact it'll supposebly half my insurance Laughing )

Any advise/info would be great.

thanks

morgan. Thumbs Up

thats incredibly odd

all the days i worked in insurance, people who were profesional drivers had higher premiums.

delivery drivers, taxi drivers etc

are they assuming, thats the only job you will be doing or something.

Thats a new one on me. Considering the blood from the blood bank up in Hendon is delivered by couriers (Chequers and DHL I think) not the NHS its definitely a new one.

Used to be Bloodrunners as they were called on bikes but they were mostly phased out years ago.

Most organs are delivered by courier these days as well. Bedford hospitals use Medical couriers/Lewis day.

Just found this...

My mate is a blood biker. He is a rospa gold rider and instructor. he does quite a few days a month on call and gets quite a few calls.
The bikes are police spec but have blood written on them. In my police area they have an agreement with the police that they can treat red lights and give ways and can contravene keep left bollards and use blues and twos but they are not allowed to speed.

The reason they do this is because the local NHS were spending over £20000 per year on taxi fares alone sending x-rays, samples and other stuff to and from various hospitals.

Ony a small part of their work is emergency blood and organs stuff.

There are various organisations around the country who voulenteer for this sort of work.

I've seen ads around asking for volunteer bikers. I saw one on a board at a rally, and I think they were up at the Hastings DGH.

Went to the local Hospitals and asked if they wanted any Bloodrunners a couple of years ago. I was also told they don't use them anymore.

As for the insurance . . . I can't see it being reduced as its higher risk than normal riding and so if anything I would think it would be on a courier rate.

I think that when he told me he said he gets a lower rate for HIS bike insurance not for the blood running bike.

He has to complete training to become a qualified runner, and you can mark this down on your insurance (like being a member of the BMF etc)
