PostPosted: 20:38 - 27 Jul 2007    Post subject: Is there a BCF VERY near miss counter? Reply with quote

Thought id take the bike out for a quick blast while we had a bit of sun this afternoon.

So I gets kitted up and shoot off towards Maidstone. Anyone who knows the area will know the hill im on about. It leads up from one mini roundabout, round a bend and up to the top of the hill where there is a big roundabout at the top.
Probably about 1/2 mile long with a junction right on the bend, Its on the outside of the bend on the way up the hill so people pulling out have a very VERY clear view of who is coming up the hill, its not a blind hill and from the junction you can pretty much see the roundabout 1/4 back at the bottom.

So im riding along doing a gods honest 40mph in a 40mph zone, Was probably doing less to be honest.
There were no cars in front of me at all. I got about 100feet from the junction when I saw a car pull up to the SOLID line (its a stop junction, not a give way).

The car driver, she looks straight at me, Then ahead again, Then begins to edge out.
Well at this point I didn't know what to do, there is a central reservation which is a wall separating the two lanes, So I couldn't swerve.

To make things worse, Id ridden into rain, so the floor was wet.

The drive looked at me again and was STILL pulling forwards. The gap was getting closer between me and her car.
Obviously by now I was progressively on the brakes, My rear is on about 2mm, so Not alot of grip in the wet really.

The gap was getting smaller and I didnt feel like I was even slowing down really, Still doing a good 25mph she is STILL pulling out into my path until she stops.

Stops dead in my path, I cant go round her because the nose of her car is in the gap in the central reservation where you can join the on coming traffic Lane.

I cant go behind her because theres a curb and the back of her car is about 1foot away. She was pretty much parked across my path.

I was getting closer and was gripping the tank with my knees, Cringing to myself, Pulling tighter and tighter on the brake lever but didn't want to go into a skid and low side it, So really felt helpless.

The bike came to a halt finally, I'm glad I had a Tinted visor because I was gurning so hard my face was aching. She was staring RIGHT at me.

I was shaking so bad, My front wheel was actually TOUCHING her front wheel. it must of touched So lightly because there was no impact or anything, Not even a tyre mark on her wheel trim.

She stayed sat in her car, clutching her steering wheel while shouting at me as if I was in the wrong.

I still didn't know what to do so, I checked my mirror and backed up a bit, then moved over to the side of the road.

The woman in the car drove off down the hill. I didn't have time to get a reg plate or anything because I was actually in quite a shaky state. Not that it would of got me anywhere anyway would it? I sat on the curb for 10 minutes before clambering back on my bike and heading back home.

I didn't even get an apology from the car driver or anything, Instead just a gob full of swear words before she drove off.

Looking back now I feel quite lucky, but pissed off at the same time.

Obviously the bike is fine as it didn't hit anything or go Down. I'm just a bit wound up myself and need to chill out.

So Split arse Cager, If you are reading this (and all dual respect to cancer sufferers), But I hope you die of cancer you stupid blind bitch! Middle Finger

No idea mate, No idea at all. Weather she didn't see me I don't know. All I know is ive got twin head lights and the dipped beam setting is broken, So I was riding on full beam. Confused

How blind can one person get.

I didn't think to kick her door or anything man, I was just in a shaky mess until I calmed down.

it'd be very full , I hate the word near miss anyway , a near miss implies that you nearly missed , and therefore got hit,

if I told you all my near misses my post count would be around the 25K mark,

Next time, get your braking under control and roll the last couple of feet into the car door. Result = car door with big dent, bike with no damage.

Then call the cops and watch her get a DCA and insurance premium hike. Thumbs Up

Oh ive had lots of Close calls where ive swerved out of the way for blind Cagers. But never anything like this where ive had nowhere to turn to avoid the situation, and felt so helpless.

Thinking about it, my NC29 has a few tatty panels and needs some bits anyway, I could of ploughed right into her and claimed for new £800 leathers, £200 Lid, £100 gloves, £160 boots, £1500 bike, £1000 injuries. Laughing

damn. Doh!

That sounds pretty bad, well done on not hitting her and not dropping the bike Thumbs Up. I reckon it's harder to judge the distance and speed of someone on full beam (still doesn't give her any excuse to pull out regardless) so maybe try just having your sidelights on instead?

I'd have gone absolutely postal if she'd started mouthing off at me as if it were my fault.

well done for not dropping it mate.. well a few months back an old woman jumped infornt of me whilst she was looking at me, she decided to jump infront of me whilst I was like 5m's away..., and due to inexperience I grabbed a handfull and fell off. But now when I see anything moving on to my path from anywhere I just back right off... didnt really enjoy sliding my bike down the road.

While I don't profess to be the greatest biker in the world (see my Topic on crashing mine!), I have to say that while she's a stupid bint for pulling out, if you've seen her from such a distance you really should have been off the power and covering the brakes well in advance, particularly if you've seen she's rolling forwards. I don't dispute that any collision would have been her fault, you could have reduced the risk early on.

Alot of riding/driving involves forward planning and anticipating the actions of other motorists, particulalry when you're as vulnerable as you are on a bike.

I suppose I'm in for some stick for this post, but ahh well Wink

Serves you right for riding at the speed limit. People don't expect that. She probably saw you coming and thought 'Thats a ruffty tuffty biker, I bet he's hooning. I'll just check my lippy and, in the time it takes for me to do that he'll be long gone and I'll be able to complete my manoeuvre'.
You are obviously at fault for riding like a 'ghey'.

Im 100% with that mate, I totally agree. I did see her from way back off.

You cant "slow down" at every single junction though just because theres a car there, I understand you can roll off the power, But even at 25-30mph she would of pulled out and id of found myself grabbing a hand full of brake.

Its a solid white line junction, you expect the driver to stop. I know expecting/assuming is the biggest way to a crash, you should never assume it, and always treat other drivers as idiots until they prove otherwise.

But if I was to go about my daily rides slowing down to walking pace at every junction etc, Id be a nervous biker, and theres nothing worse than a nervous biker.

The fact she looked at me and stopped put me in a trusting situation that I could safely carry on. Once I was on the power again climbing the hill towards the Junction she began to pull out. Slowing down on a road covered in man hole covers and white arrows, In the Wet, Is quite a difficult thing to do on 2mm of tread. Laughing

Got me new tyres on the way anyway, new fairings too so I will be forward planning more in future.

Would of been nice to plough into her door and get a nice insurance payout though. Ah well, At least im going to work tomorrow and not sat in a hospital bed bandaged up, or even on my way to the cemetery. Thumbs Up

Dont think ill be telling the parents about this when they get back tomorrow either, they worry enough when i go out and I have no close calls, Let alone making contact with a blind drivers front wheel.

Cheers for all the positive input, I was expecting this thread to be picked at to be honest.

I could fully understand if it was a 98 CBR. But this is a H reg, 1990 NC29 which has high beam lights which are no brighter than the dipped beam on my dads Busa.

Ive got new switch gear on the way anyway, So dipped beam will work soon. Smile

That would be interesting.

Almost had a decapitation yesterday. Was riding to work down my usual twisty country bend route, positioned on a right hander, middle of the lane, but my head/bodypositioning must have been nearer the centre line (narrow road), when along came a scaffolding truck with both outside wheels in my lane.....

....sit the bike up, duck, twisted in my shoulder, felt an interesting brush of compressed air over my rhs as I passed the truck, leant the bike back over again and completed the corner.

That was close....and to wonder, if I hadn't spent the 2 minutes checking my tyre pressures before I left home, that encounter probably wouldn't have happened.

When I was doing my CBT the instructor advised me that in a situation like that (or where they're edging out and you're not sure if they've seen you), to give them a good blast on your horn to let them know you're there.

Must remember to fix the horn wiring on my bike Embarassed

Yes but most people don't even realise that and just use it as an 'out of my way' signal or when they're pissed off with another road user.

Which IIRC is 'against' the Highway code. Confused

I've had about 15 near misses these last 2 months, including 2 today, worst one in that time(just lol):

**Long post ahead, scroll down now if easily bored**

Gone up a slight hill(toft green York), road level's out but is damp and I see a punto sat at the side of the road outside a pub beer garden place.

Cool me thinks, and I proceed to ride just to the left of the white lines in my lane(single carriageway), then as I got within 10 metres of it, the old bint(late 40's I reckon)driving swings a U turn........

as I was going about 25-30 and half expected it from a car, I start to brake with back, nothing.. start to break with front break too, and notice a slight decrease in speed(not pullin too hard, avoided lowside)and think "fook, no, no, no...." Laughing by this time she is directly across my road and I'm heading for her front wheel/wing.

I put me feet down and they scraped on the road(my boots actually)and the whole street just started looking
Embarassed and I came to a stop 2-3 foot away from her wheel, her clenching the wheel, and me gasping for breath Sad thinking"ooooohh, that was too fuckin close... thank fuck" Rolling Eyes Smile Then I set off and got round to the front passenger wheel of her but car, but she was still quite shocked so I calmly gesture use of mirrors to her, and looking in her blindspot, to which her Chavvy-blinged-up nob a of son opens the passenger door, shouts "fuck off, tosser" to me, I point at myself and he replies"yes, you" so I simply gesture a Wanker sign, call out "wanker" at which point she smirks at me(in a screw you way) and drive's off so I headed off on my way. It pissed me off something rotten and I don't ride too much in the wet/damp now because these inept plebs seem to be everywhere. Evil or Very Mad I'd rather not get into a situation like that again so just put it down to experience and move on. Thumbs Up Cool

Binge - sounds like you had a lucky escape, that's almost a carbon copy of my accident back in '05 - except I was travelling faster than you, and obviously don't have as speedy reactions as you!

I agree with your point ref. seeing cars at junctions - it's not practical to slow down every time you see a car at right angles to your direction of travel. Since my crash, I have actually found myself doing so to an extent - but now I'm worried that I'm going to be rear-ended by some foreign dunce of a minicab driver!

Not only that, your slowing down, forks dipping etc probably appears to the cager that you are slowing down to let them out.

Ive a feeling that the driver who pulled out on me thought I was flashing her out as my high beam was on, and my headlights do have a bit of wobble in them.

She probably looked right, Didn't see my "Bike" just saw my "bright head lights" and assumed it was a vehicle of some sort flashing me out.

Car drivers dont look at bikers as a group of vulnerable road users, Just another road user.

To be fair, having full beam on with wobbly head lights does sound like a bit of a recipe for disaster - not only is it harder to judge distance and speed for the driver, but they probably can't tell if you've got indicators on and of course the wobblyness could easily be interpreted as flashing your head lights to let them out.

Sounds like if you had hit her, she'd have had a good case Neutral.

So maybe worth sorting the problems if you haven't.
(Not that I can criticise, I got busted when I had a headlight bracket made out of a bit of computer case; which was wobblier than the wood I had used previously; though the police just threatened to do me for the light it's self, which I later checked was E marked.)

Funnily enough I had a close encounter today on the A38 coming back from the rock and blues rally, and it was entirely my fault. Sad

I was in the inside lane of the dual carriageway doing about 60 (on the Intruder with camping gear, just taking my time) and just ahead was another bike going slower than me (I know, but it does happen occasionally!) So I mirror-shouldercheck right, there is a silver car just coming up behind me on the outside. I check left to see where the bike is, glance right again and stick my indy on, and the silver car has just passed me so I start to pull out to do the overtake. Only to find a second silver car, driving right up the arse of the first one, is alongside me and I am heading straight towards a sideswipe with him. Shocked Luckily wasn't too committed to the manouvre and was able to swing back over the white line to the inside where the bike I was overtaking had pulled right over to give me room.

Phew. Wouldn't have happened if I'd done a proper right check before starting to move though. I was lucky, and it has drummed back into me the importance of doing those checks every time, even if you think you don't need to.

Heading over to Goat-Boy's the other evening (I was just testing the Sat-Nav and he roped me into bike shopping for his nice SV650 Smile ) and almost came a cropper.

Right off the roundabout and then acellerated away, only for Dozy the Audi A4 driver to pull out of the estate 100 yards ahead and right into my path. Would've been ok if the driver had acellerated, but didn't as there was another roundabout about 300 yards further on.

Slapped on the full beam, horn and anchors but was closing way too fast for comfort. Luckilly there's a right turn lane into the junction they'd just come out of so I swung a bit into that to get safely past, only to see a metro in the oncoming traffic pull into the lane. We were both edging rapidly right towards each other so whilst still lit up like a christmas tree and blaring away with the horn I gunned it through the rapidly shrinking gap, swung around the Audi, saluted the driver with an appropriate gesture and then was off on my way.

Ok, the Metro would've probably come off worst than the ZZR, but think of the paperwork... Wink

Binge, the thing is she'll be telling her family, neighbours and friends that some d1ck on a bike was whoring it up that road and almost smashed into her, putting all the blame onto the "reckless b4stard" that is you
