Fazer 600 (Old Shape) ... Good for New'un?

Hay all ...

I'm going to go down and look at a Fully Faired old shape fazer on wednesday which i can have for £800 if everything is ok. It had a front end, but wasn't recorded and now has been done up again and the seller said is mechanically 100%, but has a few scrapes and cracks around the indicators (obviously dropped it after front ending it) ...

Anyway, what will the Fazer 600 be like for a first bike? Of course it will be restricted ...

What's odd is that my dad doesn't want me to put restrictors in as he's a biker also (rides a '94 teapot) he's never had to be restricted due to having his license soo long and he's had lots of instances where he's needed the power to get out of, one story was he was inside lane off a slip road or something, car/van right up his arse, then a truck decided to pull into his lane without seeing him, there was no hard shoulder just lots of metal side thingies, so he needed the power to shoot out of there.

I will most likely at least restrict it for a couple months to get used to it etc ... But then i will think about taking them out as I potentially will be doing several 3 figure mile trips.

Anyway, that's beyond the point ...

The main point of this was to ask what the bike are like

Also with me going down to look at this bike, can anyone give me some good tips to make sure the bike is ok etc ... General checks and some in depth checks, especially to front end stuff.

that one looks like its seen better days but its cheap i guess.

As for the original fazer, they are alright. surprisingly pokey i thought. I felt like i could ride all day on it with no aches or pains and 2 up wasnt bad either. good allrounder, improved with shorter dogbones as it was a bit sloppy as standard.

I would say they are most likely a bad bike to restrict as far as restricted bikes go. When I rode one, it had a lot of power towards the top end but was rather sludgy down low, and seemed a bit linear in an on/off kind of fashion.

It wasn't all that bad after a few of minutes getting used to it but this bike wasn't restricted so I am not sure how it'd fare. I am not saying it will be rubbish or horrible, I am simply saying there are most definately better bikes to restrict for getting more acceleration out of, if it worries you as well as your father. Speed wise you'd be looking at 90/100mph tops. It would probably cap out around there, and that would be your lot. The Fazer I rode managed about 140 with the wind behind it, and that was on its own speedo so I don't have a clue about the accuracy. It got up to about 135mph with no trouble, there wasn't that much wind Seems about right though.

Overall they are good bikes though, pretty darn reliable and not bad build quality. They don't tend to completely fall apart in drops either which is nice.

As far as actually restricting it goes, that is up for you. I don't personally buy the 'I need the power to get out of the problem' scenario. Yeah it does happen, but it is unlikely. Infact you could ride a Hayabusa and get in a situation where you think, yeah a bit more power would of got me out of that with a lot less hassle. Thats fine and it probably would, I would just say that you adapt to having less power anyway, you probably wouldn't have yourself in situations that you would on a faster bike anyhow.

Now that could be bullshit, but for me personally it just cuts no ice. If you want power thats great, and if you want power beyond what your license allows, then that is also fine but remember you decide on what basis you do it. Don't do it for something silly like that.

Remember you might ride your 125cc, it will probably seem fine at first. You will run into trouble on the road, and it might cross your mind that more power would of avoided it. You will advance to a bigger bike, and the same thought will probably cross your mind again at some point.
