ummm at 17 mate you may as well forget about a 400.......and well the only 250 your get near will be a 4-stroke...which is basically the same as a full power 125 2-stroke (rs/nsr/mito etc) so id wait till your 19 mate

Get a cheap 400 and spend the rest on insuraqnce and leathers etc.
A 600 wouldn't be much more expensive on insurance (only about £200) so you could get a late 80's-early 90's CBR6 etc, restrict it and insure it all in one go Very Happy

Loadsa sub £1500 CBR's GSXF's ZZR's etc.

Why bother going through the selling and buying process again?? You may aswell just de-restrict a decent sized bike. better than jumping on a deristricted 600 straight away I suppose

everone will have a different opinion, but i would say dont get a 250. 400s are good, 600s are probly better but the insurance is a bit steep and its a fiar hop up from a 125.
so stick with the 125 for a big then try and px it or summat.

The aprillia RS250 is equally matched with the ZXR400 (for instance). I have had quotes for the RS250 and ZXR400. ZXR was cheeper and looks better. Laughing

RS250 Extrema = 70hp
ZXR400 = 64hp

I will stand corrected, but thats according to 'Bike' mag.

the problem with the RS250 and RGV250 is they're two-strokes, so you're still gonna have to rag em to get anything out of them, and they're gonna need engine rebuilds to keep them going.

The CBR250, FZR250 etc.. they have like an 18,000 redline, sheesh, I don't know much about engine reliabilty and life on 250 4-strokes, but I honestly think a 400 is the more useable option, a 600 at 17 is just a joke.

What's the problem with an extra 200cc?? The insurance is marginally more and the bike *should* be restricted anyways. It's not too much power cuz you get used to whatever you ride. I can guarantee most of you would not have a problem after riding a 600 for about 10 minues.
I've ridden a load of mates' bikes and can honestly say the 600's are great. It's just knowing how to manage the power and yourself.

Jesus i'm not talking about whether you can 'ride' a 600, there's very little difference between a 400 and 1300 except for sheer power and weight.

I'm talking about insurance and restriction, something which everyone seems to dismiss around here.

'Look at Zim'?

A: he's not 17, and secondly he may have a firestorm but from what i gathered it wasn't insured, and no 17yr old will get insurance on a decent 600. You may get insured on a single cylinder 600 trailie....just. But then why bother when you CAN insure decent 400 at that age.

I think Zim, Korn and Dru are all retty much sorted for insurance (maybe not dru).
Have you looked at insurance for 600's. Anyone can get it, check out any online quote.
Restriction is easy and at least you have something to look forward to after 2 years.
I'd prefer the step from a restricted 400/600 to a deristricted 400/600 than the step from a 125 to a de-restricted 600.
Zim's only 18 aint he??? Huuuuuge difference there.

It is a big difference actually, every year from 17-21 drops your premium by a considerable amount.

Yeah I know you can get insured on a 600, I can get insured on a Blackbird with my broker for £2300, but insuring a 600 for £1600, when you can prolly insure a 400 for £800-900 that's just crazy because they're both gonna be producing 33bhp.

Then you have to sell ur 400 after the 2 years to go bigger, you lose plenty on that then have the outlay fo another bike on top.

Also, have you checked insurance on a 400 for a 17 year old? Not tremendously cheaper

then your using the wrong insurance company, what is it, bennetts?

Also if 600s were such a brilliant idea for ppl to buy at 17/18 then why does nearly everyone on this forum that age have a 400...go figure.[/quote]
