Hi,

I bought a 2005 Honda XR125 yesterday, paying the princely sum of £900.

It all seems fine, but now and a again when i change gear it feels a bit "clunky".

Its hard to describe but isnt there when idling in neutral and isnt there when the gears are engaged, only when shifting between gears and sometimes when pulling away in 1st.

Suspecting its a clutch problem, but might just be my riding skills. If it is a clutch thing, can anyone point me in the right direction. I have no idea on how to go about fixing it or if its even broken.

The other problem with it is the back brake pedal appears to be seized. I can press it on and it works ok, but it doesnt spring back off again, I have to lift it manually as if I were changing up a gear with my right foot.

Again any advice would be most appreciated. I cant find any maintenance literature anywhere. Is this engine the same as something else I can read?

P.S. I am also after any advice on how to mount a luggage box to the rack on the back, do they all fit? or do I need a universal plate? ior something entirely different?

Funny you say that as I have a Clymer manual that has every thing you need to know in front of me , its for the models XL/ER/TL125-200 1979 till 1987 service repair and maintenance.

I got mine off a mate but there is some for sale on ebay uk.

Thumbs Up

PS with the brake, its properly the cam needs oiling so its a back wheel off job then just put a little drop of oil on there.

If above fails to work then it will be were the brake rod goes through the frame , try oiling this point as well any way.

Jordee, the XR125L is the same engine as a CG125 - ignore all the rubbish from Jamie

Valve clearance is 0.08mm

Spark plugs are DPR8EA-9 gap 0.8 - 0.9mm

Compression 13.2 kgf/cm2

There is an Italian Workshop manual floating around on the net somewhere or you can buy the real thing from Honda for about £25-30.

I have the honda 35 litre a top box fitted to mine which required a mounting plate. Takes a full face helmut easily or packing for a weekend.

The gearbox is a bit clunky on these bike, so I wouldn't wory too much - check the cable slack, though. The back brake should have a return spring - make sure it is there. If not then you might need to strip the back brake down if it is really seizing.

you guys are the mutts nuts, cheers for all the info.

An update for anyone interested:

"Most" of the clunky gear change problem has been identified as a terrible condition chain and worn sprockets. Replaced front and back cogs and a brand new chain. 99% of the problem has gone, now i am left with an occasional "kick" when pulling away in 1st at the point where you basically leave go of the clutch. Will monitor this, but suspect its just a foible ofthe bike, its honestly nothing to write home about.

Seized back brake was a wheel off job, and releasing / regreasing the spindle in there. Ta for the advice on that, I was convinced it were the pedal itself.

Have since noticed that the spark plug looks a little rusty, I know I know, but for £3 why not, its my baby after all....

Thanks for the advice on top boxes, a definite purchase in the near future, for now my rain proff bag and industrial strength elastic bands will have to suffice.

To the lads who gave me the correct advice regarding the spark plugs and other config, cheers, and cheers aswell for at least having a go jamie.

Cheers again fellas.

P.S. Does anyone now if the Honda general motorcycle maintenance manual will be of use to me?

And I'm trying to track down the official honda xr125 maintenance manual aswell, if anyone sees one anywhere gimme a nudge.

Cheers

I got an XR 125 too , have the same rattly gearbox which imo is common with this bike .
Well done changing the drive chain , I brought one myself . I havent fitted the drive chain set yet as I am looking for the same XR 125 manual for the torque settings . I havent found one yet
I know the Honda common service manuals are widely available through the net though

Hi just joined. have done 30000 miles on xr125l and just got a new one, great for commuting .
The shop manual I have is for a 03 model the only thing that has changed is crank case emissions tubing.
the part number for the manual is 62KRH00 and can be ordered from a Honda dealer or try Dave Silver spares its not cheap ,but it will pay for its self.

I have a honda xr125. Got it at start of this year, but pre reg 08. As everyone has said they are all da same with the clunky gear box. Only sames to happened 4 me when down shifting. I ave done jst ova 3000miles to and from work and on da wkends when jst messing bout. Bike has gd pulling power alow it only has 10bhp, 65 is the top speed i ave gotten out of it but mainly hit jst 50 bout town. There a good bike build to last aswell jst a shame dont ave much more power. I used to have a yam xt125r it had 12.5bhp but was shit as build quality was shit. Would def advise anyone going for tis kinda of bike 2 get a honda xr 125 as seem to be the best for build quality, reliable and jst a gd all rounder.

P.S Anyone know how to get a bit more power outta them dont really care bout top speed jst want bit more power for off-road fun cheers.

Hey Mate, similar problem with my xr125 gear box. give it a few more revs and it seems to go. The clutch in a xr125 is the same as a CG 125. they have a judder spring in them which stops the clutch grabbing so hard. get the parts through david silvers and fit it yourself.

parts are about 40 quid and may help.

other thing you can do is to take the plates out and rough htem up, then soak them in oil for a few hours. this can sometime help to smooth it out.

ive seen the manual about online for the xr125 late model 06. I cant remember but I will take a look for it again. i remember it took ages of searching. I may have it bookmarked

My son has a Honda XR125 and has a slight off and twisted his forks. Sad

These should be OK to release the clamps to straighten them but I need the torque settings for the top and bottom clamps.

Can anyone help me with this please?

Regards

Trevor

:karma: if you have a manual to call on ( even on line rather than printed on papaer ) great but visit cmnsl and find your bike, see exploded views and print off.A mqanual without text but very helpfull.

since you just bought it and already have problems take it back and get them to fix it under warranty, or sale of goods act merchantable qulaity!!!!
