Right basically im thinking a year ahead. I've been told to do my A2 test as soon as i possibly can because things will be changing etc. I've read all the guides and searched on the forum, and found some very good information. So i turn 17,and book my A2,and pass (wishful thinking) and get restricted to 33bhp for 2 years? Whats a good bike to ride at this stage. Dont get me wrong,i'd love a Cbr600rr or something along the lines, but im feeling it would be pointless as ill have to restrict it to 33bhp. I'll have 'some' money behind me,so i dont have to go for a gash bike, and i will have had a years riding experience by then aswell, be it only on a 50cc scooter, but it counts right? What about a Suzuki Sv650s. I've heard there good bikes in general and am guessing would restrict ok also. I was looking at sub 600cc bikes, such as 400's,but found them very scarce to come across. Also am i right in saying the Sv650s is tagged in a low insurance group,im sure i read this somewhere. Can any of you give me a ballpark figure for bike, test, insurance etc in £ so i know roughly how hard i am going to have to save. I'll have a job at 16 anyway. Think thats all i had sitting in my head for now. Confused Thankyou people. Thumbs Up

Cant comment on prices - its been a few years since I passed - Wink

The SV650 seems a popular bike - and isnt a real sports bike so wil obviously be cheaper insurance.

Something I will point out is - WHEN you pass, not IF!

Think positive! Thumbs Up

Rezzin, young pad one.

Yoda has spoken...... P.M.A NO PMT, THAT WILL CAUSE INSTANT FAIL

With regards to the bikes, if its a restricted sporty type bike you are after.......

Based on what people have said in the past, the SV650 is a good bike to restrict. Apparently it takes to it well and you still have nice low end torque.

However, I have never rode one restricted and dont know how reliable the source is.

Thumbs Up

id personally go for a 125 or a 250 at most.
to go straight from a 50 to a 600 is like going from a reliant robin to a formula 1 car.
theres a lot of difference between 30mph and 150mph.

Nah dont frighten the poor lad, it will be restricted to 33BHP. (Assuming rules and regs are followed)
By my reckoning it would only put out a max of 70-80MPH.

I went from a 125 to a non restricted 600cc after passing my DAS and i found the change immense but no where near beyond my ability.

So a 50 to a Restricted 600 should not be much different really?!?

My personal choice would be to buy a de-restricted Mito or RS125 but I love 2 strokes.

you could always get a restricted 400 and quietly derestrict it

totally illegal and if your caught doing 120 or have a bad crash where the insurance/cops investigate your completely screwed

if your careful and lucky its an option

A nice Manuall Poggialli Aprillia RS125 wouldnt be a bad shout.

Especially a 05 reg with 5080 miles on the clock in pretty decent condition which I know is up for sale. Mr. Green Thumbs Up

The owner of the bike (Who I must admit is very good looking) would like to sell ASAP so would consider sensible offers around £1400.

Wouldnt recommend 50cc - 650cc jump, itd overwhelm you. Even if it is restricted, 125 - 650 scared the hell out of me the first week.

The SV does take restriction well, and will still top out about 105mph depending on the condition of the bike. So all in all, not bad. But its not a difference in top speed that will scare you, its the acceleration. In the time your 50 takes to get to 30, the SV could quite happily be on 70 or 80.

For prices, bike - you can pick a really good one up, one of the pointy models for £2000 - £2500 or you could get an older bubble model for a bit over £1000, but the pointy looks much much nicer. Lower fairings are good too, so look for a bike with them they enhance the bikes looks alot and do give a fair bit of weather protection.

Insurance - I was 17, living in an urban estate and I paid £700. My friend got his for just under £500 with a years no claims.

Test - Itll be £25 for theory when you come to take it, and something silly like £60 for the practical. Down to you if you want to pay for professional tutoring, I didnt and I passed. But if you do want tutoring for your practical, I imagine prices will be about the same as car driving lessons so around £22 p/h.

So all in all, you should be looking at about £2500 - £2800 for an SV. Thats going to take alot of saving at 16.

I'm in the same position as young rezzin here really....(Young because i'm a school year older, still counts).

I like the new ER-6n especially in orange yum yum Razz But beings i'm going to college i thought that a 250 or 125 would be good because they do more MPG and are generally cheaper to run. Only thing is that their aren't really any 250's anymore.

I prefer to buy new, don't care if i lose money because rather than save less i try and save more to get the best i can. Each to their own Wink . I'm looking at the Suzuki VanVan i think they're pretty cool and the retro look is quite appealing to me. But i'm not sure what to do either a 125 or a 600, i'd like a sportier 125 but the RS is a 2-stroke which i don't want and the CBR is too small and that front wheel looks dangerous! Shocked

I join the journey of biking with Rezzin, we can ride into the sunset holding han........ Shocked I did not say that...

You could always do what I'm doing, ride a de-restricted 2 stroke 125 while in the 33bhp period. They are cheap to run, and very easy to work on, and don't cost much to insure if you shop about enough.

I have ridden an SV650 (naked) and the power was incredible in comparison to my nsr, but not to much for me to handle I don't think.. (the bike was full power). But all the same I'm still learning I feel, even though I've been riding for 2 years. I'm preferring to learn how to ride a bike before I learn how to ride one fast.

I would do what ncrn is doing and ride a 2 stroke 125cc while you are restricted.

Any 'good' 2stroke 125's that can be had then? I've heard of the usual Nsr,Rs125,Dt125 etc. Any cheaper going ones, would be good brand new,but again, doesnt have to be seeing as im using it as a 'scape goat' for 2 years. Thumbs Up

I'm in the same position as Reece and Hollis, but i'm heading towards an SV (friend of the family said i can have it trade price, just a matter of selling my 50 now)

I rode my freinds sv650 'S' on a car park the other night and it wasn't scary, it was bloody good fun though, give it about half throttle in first and it'll still try and rip your arms off. It was awesome. Mr. Green Ok it's not restricted, but as people keep saying the SV is meant to take restrictions quite well.

SV is a laugh, its a very forgiving bike whilst your still learning.

Get a corner wrong and itll handle last minuite braking or altering your path mid corner without weaving. Bounces back from heavy braking, and doesnt dip into corners too quickly till your confident and make it dip in.

Im glad I got one, excellent bike, tbh even though I want a new bike (underseat exhaust zx636) im not sure ill enjoy it as much as the SV. Theyre just so easy to live with and use day in day out.
