Well i found the car who knocked my bike over and left it in the road. Evil or Very Mad
I got a description of the car (burgundy Golf) and the numberplate except for the first letter from a BT engineer who left a note with one of my housemates

Well i found the Golf two roads away by chance. Now do i leave them a note under their wipers asking whether they want to sort it out without involving insurance or do i go ahead and claim through my insurance straight away?

I'm only TPFT so it will be their insurance that will be paying up and i have been informed that claiming will not affect my own no claims.

Damage includes broken indicators, scratched/slightly dented engine casing, scratched tail unit and small crack in my nose fairing.

I think it would come to less than the average insurance excess to repair so would probably be in the car drivers interest to do it without involving their insurance.

What would you do? I have never had to claim before etc.

1st - make sure the bt guy will act as a witness, if he doesnt your screwed
2nd - inform the cops
3rd - see if theyll settle without insurance
4th - contact your insurance with their insurance details
5th - get an estimate and send it in asap

if the repair is more than the price you paid for the bike then offer a cash settlement or theyll write it off with a cat c if you fix it

your witness is most important
then its up to the cops to charge them for failing to stop etc.

your no-claims isnt affected or next years policy as your not claiming, they are - your the 3rd party and carry 0% liability - they are 100% liable

I would knock on their door, say you have an independent witness etc and they can pay without insurance now, Or you'll be left with no choice but to contact them the next day. The arsier they are, the more stuff was "broke" Not that you should be going 'there'..... Twisted Evil Laughing

As above.. police, note, insurance.. you need that witness 100%...

Someone knocked my bike over in the road by my work.. I got told by someone further down the road that it was a young blonde bird with a small blue car...

well i know whos daughter that was Wink My bikes a stunt bike and has crash bars etc so I really wasn't bothered about it damage wise, just a bit pissed they drove off without even trying to tell any one in my office what had happened etc.. no note, no nothing..

So next time I saw her dad I said something along the lines of "did you hear my bike got knocked over? yeah some young blonde girl in a small blue car, knocked it over and drove off without a word.. scratched it up and dented a few things and had starting trouble with it being on its side all day.. doubt i'll ever find her, irresponsible biatch."

wonder if he spoke to his daughter Laughing

I dont know who the witness was though. It was a Bt engineer working on a neighbors phone line. Not even sure which neighbor it is!
Do you think i could phone BT to see if they can provide me with the details of which engineer was on my road that day?
The damage is not more than the value of teh bike so that ok. Its probably £300 max if i get proper Yamaha bits.

I could let her know, you happen to know her number by chance? Wink Laughing @ Sparks! Mr. Green

Kaben, I would either phone BT or ask your neighbor, see if you can get this info without having to make 'empty threats' about a witness, but deffo go for it, they might look out next time, and take responsibility for their actions.

If you're thinking of a new front nose cone from yamaha, you'll be looking at a fair bit of cash... new plastics are mega expensive usually! even little bits..

Well even if you can't trace this witness, you don't have to tell the offender that. I reckon that when you tell them they were spotted doing it by a witness who passed you the details, they won't even think that this 'witness' is now untraceable. Only if they kick up a fuss and deny it will you have to become more resourceful.

If they have got an ounce of decency they will admit what they did when faced with the fact that you know it was them. Failing that and if you can't prove it was them, kick f**k out of their car one dark night.

I will leave a note on their windscreen saying that they may settle it without involving insurance if they contact me by Monday. Otherwise i will report the incident to the police for their failure to stop and claim through my insurance company.

If i demand £300, which is only slightly over the average £250 excess on most policies,im sure they will accept. They will incur more financial problems from having to pay excess, lose their no claims and then pay a larger premium next year if we go via the insurance route.

Did anyone "happen to be in the clapham area" and witness this incident? Nudge nudge Wink Wink

As long as theres enough to repair the bike you can help yourself.

Oh thats right i remember now - fairing was completely smashed, engine casing cracked and a small child was left dying under the bike.....

should get a modest payout...... lol Laughing

Why don't you just ring up BT and ask them which one of thier engineers was working on whichever street on whatever day as they are a witness to an RTA? They should have a record of it, I would have thought!

^^ :up:Whats with all the note under the windscreen bullshit?

Be absolutely sure this is the car that damaged your bike then left, then smash his windscreen and slash his tires, all of them, do in the bodywork if you are really on it... As a matter of fact a pepsi bottle full of petrol in the back seat... maybe a bit far there, but it sounds doubtfull you will ever receive anything for this so just console yourself with a bit of revenge...

In general, the excess is only paid if you make a claim on your own policy due to fire or theft - or if you're fully comp. You don't pay an excess when someone else claims against your policy (the "third party" bit of the insurance).

As Kara said, BT will have a record of who was in your road. It may take a couple of days, but they will be able to provide you the engineer's details, or get a message to him to call you. As he was a witness to an RTI, they will cooperate.

Don't expect the police to do this, though, you'll have to do it yourself.

And don't suggest any sums until you've had the bike checked over by mechanics and got quotes.

Note under the windscreen? Are you a man or a mouse? Go to their door, knock on it and tell them you have an independent witness (whether you do or not) and that if they don't pay up you will be reporting them to the police for leaving the scene of an accident and you will get the money through their insurance anyway. Be calm and don't use insults. Worth a try first before you go to all the hassle of finding the BT engineer, which you can still do if they don't go for your first try.

First thing I would do is phone BT and see how far you get. Most likely they will tell you to go swing since your a member of the public. If that happens, you have to decide whether to front-up the guy or take punitive measures as suggested above. You can't do both since once you've met him/left a note he'll have your details.

I know what I would do, I'd fix my own bike keep my mouth well shut about the whole thing and go for an early-morning stroll.

The car is at the end of a terraced street so i dont know which house they live at. Im not going to knock on every door asking if its there car. I live in stockwell - i will probably be shot or knifed.

Not that it's relevant for a claim against you, but anyway, my excess is only £50 on the car, and £75 on the 6 bikes.

Knock on the door(turn up on the bike in bike gear), show him the note ask for cash to repair if he won't, ring bt and ask them for the engineer to contact you (will seem less dodgy than for them to give you details for one of there employees) and go through insurance. I think at would work for me anyway 6'5 and 15 stone people rarely say no. Rolling Eyes

Failing all that mate get one of those emergency glass hammers they have on the buses give it a slight tap around all his windows on the car (doesnt need to be hard).

And if you still feel this isnt enough do the same to every panel on his precious motor, and key the word C*NT on his bonnet forward facing in foot high lettering. (if you really want to be clever do it backwards so it can be seen in peoples rear view mirrors like on ambulances etc).

If this isnt sufficient i'd personally kidnap his dog/wife/him. Mr. Green

Hope u get it sorted though or take some kind of revenge if you have to fork out for it. Thumbs Up
