Hi, just wondering if anyone's got one and if they're any good.

I only want them for indicating 6th gear for long journeys, and 1st and 2nd for wheelies.

How quickly do they tell what gear you're in?

Thanks in advance! Smile Thumbs Up

Not exactly sure how they work, think its off the revs but I couldn't be without one...............or maye I'm too used to knowing what gear I'm in as both my last bike had one. As soon as your in gear and pull off it should change straight away.

You may confuse it at a set of lights but picks the number out when you get moving again.

Comes in handy on the track.

My brother bought a GSXr750 a few weeks ago and I had a go on it last sat, really impressed with the built in gear indi so I bought one and fitted it a couple of days ago. I got the datatool but its pretty much the same thing (bit cheaper and you ground a wire to set up rather than press a button like the acumen)

No more going for 7th gear Razz

Scary cutting into the bikes loom but its only 5 wires, don't actually cut your bikes loom just remove 1cm of insulation then push the new wire inside the bikes and wrap then solder. Re insulate with either tape or heat shrink and your done. It measures RPM against Speed and calculates gear from it other 3 wires are ground, power and neutral.

It does get lost when you hold the clutch in as rpm's = tickover but road speed is moving or 0 but it (on my bike) finds the gear in 0.3 of a sec as soon as the clutch is let out. That makes no difference as you look down to see what gear your in before you go to change. The speed of change is bike specific as it depends on how quickly the ecu pulses.

The acumen is around £60 you can but an extra loom specifically for certain bikes but at £35 its a bit much and my digi only cost £42 (ebay but seller has a shop online aswell, new sealed)

GSXR one is a different technology. The GSXR knows what gear the bike is in, and can display accordingly, where as these use tacho and speed readings. GSXR one uses the same technology that the TRE uses against it, if you see what I mean. Smile

When I first started riding this was my biggest quirk, not having a gear indicator apart from 6th (overdrive). After a while I just got to the point where if the RPMs are too high then upshift. Too low then downshift. At certain speeds you just know what gear you're in. For example on my bike 55mph is 5th gear 4k rpm, 25 is third 2.5k, 60 is just fast enough to shift into 6th at 3.5k.

I get funny looks in town doing 35mph 6th gear at less than 2k on the tach. Putt putt putt putt putt.. =p

This is where I got mine from, about £1 cheaper than using his ebay site
https://www.bikersdiscountstore.co.uk/acatalog/Digital_Gear_Indicators_and_Rev_Light.html

Keep scrolling down to see the datatool and acumen ones (any bike)

I've got the Acumen DG8 and think it is a really handy piece of kit. I've got the plug and play version so there was no cutting of wires etc, worth the extra cost in my opinion. Thumbs Up

Take a look at this company - they seem a little cheaper than Datatool or Acumen.

Various colours and you can also get ones that sit behind the neutral light indicator

The only time Ive ever wanted a gear indicator is when I jump onto a new bike for the first time. Rode a mates Sprint ST 1049 thingy the other day and never knew what gear I was in at any one moment for the first few miles (IL4 - Triple engine was a weird jump!).

Other than that Im not sure I want or need one, if the bike isnt pulling as much as I want I drop a gear. If I want to drop the revs I go up a gear. If Im in top and Im looking for 7th I try to get seventh, realise Im in sixth and carry on riding. Not sure if 60 quids worth of wiring loom chopping is worth it IMO.

On a side note, and this is not my personal opinion honest, any time the subject of gear indicators has come up in my circles they have always been approved for learners and little girls. Dont take my word for it though Laughing

Having an extra thing to look at would probably slow me down. I base this assumption on the fact that not having a speedo to look at makes me faster in the twisties, as I'm paying attention to the road and my speed in relation to it, not at a little number or dial.

I've been looking at this and I think it's pointless... Fine they look mint but 60£ is a little harsh... 30 and I'd buy it.
When you're in 6th and try and shift up it's not the end of the world...It's not like the chain jumps off. You get the same result as when you don't do anything...
The only reason for me to know what gear I'm in is if I've been trying to find neutral and the bike is in like 3rd cause of going spastic on the pedal!
Kind of like the rev indicators. Useless crap. You can feel and hear when to change gear

On the CB500, both the speedo and tacho needles point the same way when in 6th Thumbs Up

With all the concentrating on the DAS I would sometimes forget be in one gear to high for corners. Riding away from a set of lights down a duel carriage the instructor asked what gear I was in, to which I replied with a shrug of the shoulders Laughing

Every so often I still try for 7th Rolling Eyes

I've got one, and they are not all "cut into loom" jobs - depends on the bike Smile

My 'busa has one, which is a "plug in" job, using a passthru connector behind the dash.

Easy to install (once you've got the bloody fairing off) - but I think it needs re-teaching, as it's a bit slow to update the display after a shift (3-4 secs) - but I did teach it at low revs.

Even with a counter i uesd to go for another gear, never looked at it.... Rolling Eyes

After a while you don't need to know which gear you are in, you can tell by revs/speed if you are in the correct gear.
You should have responded with the correct one for the speed i'm doing.....

This was one of my first problems before I got into biking - the sequential shift.
However over time it's become less of a problem, rather than thinking "oh I should be in X gear" it's more like "oh I should be at X revs - better shift up/down".
By knowing what RPMs you want to ride at you forget about the actual number and just stick it in whatever gear is required.

yeah, but with a Triple, you just use 1st to get it rolling then whack it up to top for the rest what with the torque.. Smile
