Ok, I've got an old computer but its still fairly ok for selling on.

Its got a 19" CRT monitor which I'm going to bin and sell it on with a 15" Flat screen.

Its a P4 2.4ghz, 512mb RAM, CD and DVD re-writers, Geforce MX440 (does CS:S @ 90fps or something so its not bad) and I'm going to have to replace the old internal HD.

How much to install a new HD and how much do you think the computer is worth?

Do you think its worth getting a new HD installed just to sell it on? Got to be worth some cash to someone eh?

I would put a 40-60 gig hard drive in about £25-£30 also you will need to put an operating system on, then I think you could ask for about £175- £200. Is it a branded system or a made up pc?

Made up PC, its about 4 years old now and I have Windows XP Pro sitting in the house for it. The HD is gubbed...

How easy is it to swap and old for new HD and install Windows? Easy enough for a n00b?

Very easy to change the HD Colin, 2 cables and possibly a few screws that hold in in place. Make sure you get the right drive though, I'd assume being that old its an IDE drive you want, not a SATA.

As for installing Windows, it's fairly straight forward. There's a million and one guides online for it. The whole job should take you maybe 90 minutes in total including formatting, assuming that you have all the old drivers you need. Wink

No problem at all, open side case before touching anything internal, touch some metal to remove any static electricity from you, remove power cable and ide cable (the 2inch white cable with red strip) undo screws remove drive which could come out of the front or the inner box side.

place new hd in same way connect cables and screws, go fire the pc up press delete as it loads, go into bios and make sure it is booting from cd/dvd drive as first option, put os in drive it will re-boot when you exit bios, and follow on screen instructions.

then place said pc in local paper shop/windows/ supermarket notice boards. Wait for customer to ring take cash off them. Next step go to the pub and start thinking I could make a business out of this. As the beers start affecting you're normal brain thoughts.

hope that helps
Kc

personally i dont think youll get much for it.
PCs can be had real cheap these days from DELL etc so no one will want to pay too much for quite an old system.

id expect £100 at the most depending on where you advertise it and who buys it.

Well I've formetted the existing HD and re-installed XP (most advanced thing I've ever done with a PC) and its working a treat. Almost tempted to keep the old machine and punt my new one!!

Will stick a few programs on it then its ready to go!

I would have to agree with T1z3R there is no money to be made in 2nd hand hardware unless you never bought it in the first place. If i was you try and find a cheap bit of memory to bung in it to make it 1gig.

Not looking to make a huge deal off it, it has to go and even if I get £50 for it, it will pay for something rather than gathering dust.

Use is to monitor ya bike.

Set it up somewhere with a webcam to monitor your bike or where ever you park it.

Then use web cam trigger to film any would be theives.

or network it for experience and play some lan games with mates.

Thats what I did with my old one.
