You should have no problems if you buy newish hardware mate. Depends on what you are looking to build a pc from old parts or just buy new parts and fit them yourself.

Just make sure you don't skimp on price with a power supply, a cheap one will be inefficient and likely to blow up, taking your CPU, RAM etc with it.

buy yourself this book: Building a PC 'In Easy Steps'

the easy steps range is like the dummies range, but about ten million times better, more concise, and more organised, this book took me from knowing literally nothing about PC internals, through to building my own, step by step it takes you through it, from buying the bits, to clipping them into place, and through the setup with the BIOS

combine this with the manuals that come with your motherboard, and its all you need, the one below is the updated second edition, so covers Vista, and some more up to date hardware although doesnt put emphasis on the absolute latest hardware, so you dont feel like what you are reading is out of date

google tomshardware. Im pretty sure there was a walk through on puting a pc together.

Seriously though its not that hard. Handy if you know someone who has done it before.

Most difficult part is connecting the wires from the pc case to the motherboard. USB, power button etc. but the manual with the motherboard should show you how. That and the cables are marked so kind of hard to go wrong really.

Take ya time inserting the cpu and heatsink as they can sometimes be a bit fiddly.

I agree with Tomshardware..
Simple but indepth guides for most pc building tasks..
He is also independent from the manufacturers so his reviews on hardware etc should be unbiost...

There was a good video clip on there years ago when 1 gig was cutting edge cpu speed.. They used liquid nitrogen as a coolant and over clocked it to 3gig.. Showed it running with quake.. I tried to find it to link to but its no ware to be seen..

You can always buy a bare bones system of your choice then add the hard disk, memory, graphics card etc of your choice.
Then put on the OS you have and your cooking on gas...
The only difference from this and starting all the way from parts is you don't need to put the mother board in the case, add the cpu and fan etc.

There are many company's out there to use but i like:
www.scan.co.uk
www.ebuyer.co.uk

Personal choice at the end of the day..

Agree wholeheartedly with these, and would like to add:

CCL
Novatech

Only thing I'll say is that CCL's postage charges used to be rather steeper than the others.

Also give thought to www.overclockers.co.uk

www.aria.co.uk are good, especially some of their superspecials deals.

I'm mid way through my first ever build right now, it is so easy it is unreal. I'm just waiting for trickles of money to add to my system. Laughing
