PostPosted: 19:40 - 19 Aug 2007    Post subject: Dell Laptops Reply with quote

There comes a time, in some people's life where, their parents decide to leave them in England and as a comprimise they are allowed contact with the outside world through the medium of a laptop.

Now, enough of the silly shit. Mummy and Daddy are leaving me here and it's time for me to start growing up and i've got some money saved up from working in Egypt.

The folks have said they'll chip and all told i have 400 quid to spend on a laptop, so recently i've been looking at the Dell Inspirion 1501. Seems like a good enough bet to me, but i'm not shit hot with computers so wouldn't REALLY know. Anyone heard any horror stories or is it a reasonable machine?

Any comments like, it's shit, aren't welcomed so please elaborate Razz

PC-World have been giving a free laptop to anyone who signs-up with Orange broadband for a year, but I'm not sure if the deal is still going.

I have the Inspiron 6000. It's a great little machine. Even the Head of IT at my school when he booted it up once said 'Bloody hell that's quick'.

It's had coffee poured down the speakers and takes a fair bit of abuse, but it has given me no problems in a year of ownership.

My only gripe is the sound-card. The signal-to-noise ratio is pants and embarrassed me when I plugged it into a PA for a backing track at a gig rehearsal and the noise was unbelievable.

Go for XP rather than Vista, though.

I've had a Dell laptop and it is very good.

Its taken a fair old hammering, back and forth in a rucksack on the back of my bike, logged in and out of almost daily, left on for hours on end and abused by countless working girls, if I remember rightly, one of them even spilt coffee granules into the keyboard, and it survived, LOL

But take care to remember that about a year ago, there was a thing where Dell batteries from a certain batch (around three years ago) were setting on fire if left on too long ... so be sure and check on the Dell website, that the battery isn't one that comes from the dodgy batches. This might only be relevant if you were buying a second-hand one, though.

They've sorted it now apparently, though.

Don't let you put you off.
Dell's are okay.

Personally I'm after a nice Sony Vaio, but thats still a bit out of my price range at the moment.

Cheers for the offer Shaggy but ordered mine last night after speaking to my uncle who said it would be good for enough what i plan to do with it.

Thanks for the post Hellkat I'll try not to abuse it too much but it sounds like it can take a fair old bashing anyway!

D'you occasionally get a crunching/grinding sound now with certain keys? Laughing

If you buy from dell make sure you haggle!!! You can get so much discount by claiming 'you were hoping to spend about £xxx and have seen a similar laptop cheaper online'

I got over £100 off the price they originally wanted.

Nope, but it comes in damn useful when there's no Starbucks in the immediate vicinity

Had to be a year otherwise they probably would not have got it installed before the end of the contract Wink .

All the best

I've got the same Laptop and was getting bad noise when plugging into an amp. Don't think it's the laptop though, as a good quality lead solved the problem for me. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the advice. I'll get a decent audio lead and try again. It's a real pain having backing tracks on CD as you can't adjust the mix, so to be able to run Cubase and adjust the mix to suit the room is a huge bonus.
