I've just passed by full bike test, and now looking to get first bike (prob a CBR600F).

Have had car insurance for years but obviously no bike insurance. Have phoned a few companies to see if they can provide cover for test rides, they say they only provide specific-bike 1 year policies. Have checked with car insurer to see if they can provide "any vehicle" TP cover, but they only cover cars.

If you are a new biker, with no existing bike insurance to cover you, is the only way to buy your first bike through a dealer? Are there any insurance companies out there that can offer cover for test rides of private bikes for sale?

Cheers for any guidance on this...

FF.

Hi, the Mrs has TP cover on any vehicle that she has a license for, and doesn't own through her car insurance with National Farmers Union. Not a great deal of help, I know, but might be worth looking at different car insurance too. Smile

3 solutions:

# ask the seller to take you for a ride on the back , you can feel / see hear problems with the bike, ie look down at the zorst for blue/black smoke, feel if the handling isn't as it should be ,

hear if the revs go up in an unexplained way turning the bars,

AND you can look at the bike after to see if anything has gone wrong ie leaky fork seals etc,

the rest you can test on the centre stand.

# get a biker mate to try for you, but make sure that you do not base your entire decision on his/her test ride , since this may involve a falling out if the test pilot doesn't spot any problems.

#get the seller to meet you at your DAS school , my school was friendly enough to have a look at a few bikes for people they'd taught, they also have insurance to ride anything.

What about taking out a policy against a mates bike that includes "riding other bikes" then when you buy a bike just change the bike on the poilicy.

You can't take out a 2nd policy on a bike, so if your mate already insures his bike you can't do it, and also policies usually require the vehicle to be owned and registered in your name. Plus, if you're a new rider and not that old you may find it difficult to get an insurance policy tha covers you TPO on any other bike.
