has anyone been on the back of a bike at more than 70mph?

what's it like? i might have to do it in a couple days and im shitting meself, will i be holding on for dear life or will it be okay?

(yes i am a chicken shit, but going 70mph with just a grab rail stopping me from coming off and being killed isn't something im particularly excited about Razz )

I don't like it all that much but it sure does get your heart pumping! I prefer to be in control myself. I was once on the back of a naked bike (ZRX1100) doing 130mph on the motorway holding just the grab rail and I thought I was going to die Shocked . My advice is hold on around the riders waist once the speed gets to NSL and above and then switch to the grab rail for lower speeds so you can have some dignity when people can see you Razz . The ride back doing silly speeds whilst I was holding the riders waist felt 10x better.

All depends on the rider. If they're smooth and aren't doing it to scare the crap out of you, it'll be fine. If not, might be a bit hairy.

A good grab rail can make a difference too.

I have been pillion at silly speeds, I usually don't find it a problem, and my teenage children are regular pillions of mine and ask me to go faster! They just rest their hands on grab rail, they never hold on to me even at speeds of 100+

Just relax and enjoy Smile

I've been on the back of my mates SRAD quite a few times at 100+MPH, no grab rail either I just held his waist when accelerating. Most of the time gripping with my legs was enough.

I've been on the back of Tatters bike at 160 when mine was smashed up. My advice would to hold onto the rider not grab rails and tuck down. I was holding onto grab rails and it was quite hard work.

Been on the back of a few bikes now,

Arrow Bandit 400 leather seat strap to hold onto kills your nuts when the rider brakes but is fairly comfortable otherwise for a pillion

Arrow ZXR750 had NOTHING to hold onto which was a bit hairy and the guy riding it had a textile jacket that inflated so i couldnt hold onto it Confused, had to put my arm around the rider and onto the tank to stop bashing my lid into his back under braking.

Arrow Blackbird 1100 which was a total blast the guy i went on with was doing power wheelies with me on the back at over a tonne, me holding onto the grab bar at the back with one arm and the other around the rider (he insisted on this in case i fell off lol)

Been on a few more but cant be arsed to list them all, basically if you've been on the back once and survived it'll put your confidence up.

Speed isn't an issue as already said. I have been on the back of a Z750Turbo flat out and felt safer on that than my mates CX500 pooltling around town, as he was a shiyte rider.

I've only been on the back of my brother's Bandit at 90mph, and have never had a problem or felt at risk. It's nice not having to put up with the wind-blast, too.

I have to disagree ariel, i think as people have stated here it all depends on the rider, i think the bike itself is an important factor depending on what there is to hold onto.

Kiers just try and enjoy it, it could be worse (you could be walking/using public transport) Thumbs Up

Yip - Good ol' Scott (Yoko) took me on the back of his doing above 100 - Not been on the back for ages to totally craped it - was fun tho. I prefer to be in control.
Another I was getting a lift back home as bike was being fixed - This guy ive known for a while asked if he could go faster - I agreed (thinking a ton) but no 140ish and he was throwing the bike around - Dont think I could get back on again doing that speed Laughing He had 20+ riding years exp but still was a bit rough.

I never used to like it, however as I got more used to riding my bikes at speed it started to not bother me so much.

If the rider's going for a bit, I'll move my arse back a bit and stick a hand on the petrol tank. If the rider accelerates hard then your hand is pulled back against them, so you don't fall off the back, however I find that by leaning further forward your body position 'works' better with the acceleration, not throwing you back so much and making it feel less 'scary'.

I took a friend on the back of my zx6 a few years. He mentioned that he had stuck his head out on a straight and found his helmet being badly buffeted - I pointed that's probably 'cos I was sitting at about 120mph, which he hadn't realised or been worried about.

Before I rode myself I was pillion a lot. I used to love it then, but i really don't like it anymore as i prefer to make the decisions. I find it best to hold onto the old "love handles" you can get them for around £10, more dignified (and easier to hold onto) than the rider's waist and inspires more confidence and more comfort than holding onto a grab rail. I found i did a lot of the work with my legs when braking and accelerating. And remember the old chestnut "lean forward whilst accelerating and slightly back whilst braking" and tense your legs on the pegs so they take a lot of the strain. Oh and no fidgeting! Lol

Riding bitch is easy, much easier than you think. Before i climbed on it was a bit sketchy, but as soon as we were on the move it all felt 'natural'. Just hold on. And keep yourself tucked in like joe said,no sudden movements, flow with the rider. Thumbs Up

Perched on a modern sports bike pillion seat will not be comfortable for long, you'll be higher than the rider and so get more wind blast (but a better view of the approaching accident Wink).

Riding on a tourer (BMW, Pan, etc.) you'll be more comfortable, more sheltered. Mate of mine nearly went to sleep on one.

Thumbs Up

Depends how much you trust the rider in my opinion.. My dad has had his license 10 years so i trusted him at 150mph on his blade.. Where as my dads m8 had his license for 2 years and i didnt wna go on it... "Had being the key word" i know what hes like and now hes banned for Drink Driving... So yer... in my opinion m8 only do it if you trust the rider and trust being in the position you will be in

Just for those that live in England and speak English "Bitch" is US slang for Pillion, that homosexual Harley riders use. Thumbs Up

and I thought he was referring to riding my Ex-girlfriend...

Back of a CB500, two different CBR900RR FireBlades, GT500, XJR1200

It's not too much of a problem as long as you remember not to fall off and you arent massively taller than the rider.

Trust is the biggest issue, you really have to trust the rider you are with. On the GT500 I wasn't holding on to the rider or the bike. That particlular rider had me hold my knees. Sounds weird but worked - mostly because he was so smooth.

I've found the longer I''ve been riding the worse I get as pillion, I am finding it harder and harder to trust the riders instincts.

Been on a ZX6-R at 150mph... Don't put both your arms on the rear grabrail if you don't want to fall off.

150+ on the back of LukeVFR's R6.

Not many people I'd trust at those speeds TBH.
