Does anybody think a TZR 250 that has been sat at the back of a garage for 6 years maybe more is worth £400? I'm so tempted to part with my cash.

have you seen the bike? - what condition is it in?

It may require stripping down and rebuilding - freeing up any seized linkages/mechanisms (calipers etc). Apart from the engine not been run in 6 years, remember that to get it back on the road will need tax and mot.

I'd try to knock the price down a bit, but only buy it if you can honestly see it going back on the road and you are not trying to revive a rusty relic as that will just empty your wallet.

If it's got all the bits, and you have money to invest in it... Do it!

I imagine it's probably worth that in spares... What are the plastics like and is it a complete bike?

It's a complete bike but I can't knock the price down as that is what someone has offered them. It was ridden and then left and forgotten about. I may be having a look at it soon so will see what it's like.

You might be lucky then, you'll need to clean the carbs, put new plugs on and treat it to a new battery, but it /might/ just fire up

You'll probably need new tyres as well if it hasn't been laid up properly

Hi

If it is in half decent condition then it is worth more than £400 as spare parts.

Set of decent original exhausts alone would be worth a substantial chunk of that value.

TZR will run with a screwed battery, but don't expect it to have any go as the power valves probably will not manage to operate.

All the best

Keith

WHat model TZR is it?

1kt/2ma are the early, parallell twin models and are considered to be the most reliable of the TZR's

https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery%20%20A/Yamaha%20TZR250%2085.jpg

3ma is probably the coolest stroker ever made with its reverse Cylinder set up and underseat pipes, and supposedly they go like stink. But, they have an aweful reputation for reliability. I've been told that almost all of them have the same problem: The pin in the piston to keep the rings in place overheats and falls out, your rings start to move until the end of a ring snags in a port ... ouch. I think this usually happens on the left cylinder.

3XV is the last of the TZR's and as such the most modern looking. I've heard they're not the most reliable, but I havnt heard any specific horror stories.

Any road, If you have 400 quid to spare, its probably not a bad buy.

I paid £300 for a complete TZR in a fairly terrible state. Have a check of the engine, if there's compression and it's not seized then it's £400s worth easy.

The exhausts and rear shocks are worth decent money.

I sold mine for £450 to a racer who wanted it /only/ for the frame.

It's a 2MA. How do I check for compression? Can I really lose money on this if all goes badly as I could just sell it in bits then scrap the rest, in theory.

I doubt you'll lose money if it has all the bits. If it has decent fairing lowers I might even buy them.
Parts and help across the net is readily available.
I went through what you are contemplating and with a bit of effort and not that much money you can end up with a pretty good bike that will get you noticed. OH and it smells brilliant Very Happy

Edit: I have just noticed that you are a student so we might disagree about the meaning of "not that much money"

I'd go for it.

I am a student but I'm planning on getting a job. There is no rush to get it sorted out. One of the reasons I'm buying it is because of the smell (and the sound). Need to get it running first.
