or maybe who are you in school?

I was listening to my wife talking about her school days, and it's become apparent she was one of the bubbly take part kind of people (which if you knew her would be unsurprising).

I was someone that sat out of the way and regarded everyone with silent disdain.

What kind of kid were you/are you at school?

Never had any best friends through school but had no enemies either.

Just kind of floated along.

if anything I was the kid who used to crack one liners in class and get made to stand outside for it now and then

Fought for the rights of her fellow class mates when treated unfairly by unruly teachers who bunked a lot and put the class down. I had great fun in school though but no one was educated even though we all fought for it.

I was an A-C student throughout my years
I was in the top set for most subjects
I was a prefect that was always getting told off?
I was in the top 10% in chemistry/physics and biology so had an extra lesson at lunchtime every wednesday
I used to play the trumpet. Me and one of my best mates did a duet for a concert, we played Largo or the 'Hovis' theme Laughing
I used to play for the rugby team at full back
I used to represent the school at Javelin (was the best since year 9). Most lunchtimes during the summer I would take one out and throw for an hour or so instead of just sunning myself and being bored.
I would either sit at the front due to be blind as a bat or sit at the back and ass around by chatting up the girls and again get told off all the time
I used to be one of those lads whom would play football in the playground at every break
I never had a detention

I wouldn't call myself a jock or a boff and certainly not a goth or grunger. I would have an eclectict mix of friends and a wide social circle at school yet always seemed to be lonely and isolated.
I was and maybe still am the classic under acheiver

I was "Easily Distracted". I think that was in every school report I ever had.

However, I got on with everyone, I think playing football helped that though.

I was certainly more sporty than I am now.
I was good at tennis, softball, swimming and netball.
But I was rubbish at hockey.

I was too afraid of my mother and the nuns to be really naughty, so I never bunked school, and I was shocked when my younger sister was suspended for a week, for being caught smoking in the local boys' school. Although I'd go for the odd fag down by the lake in the 6th form, if there were no nuns in the classrooms facing the lake (nuns have very beady eyes, they see everything!)

I wasn't in the "popular" group of girls who wore too much (shoplifted) make-up, had exotic hair-dos, had questionable uniform habits, or got pregnant and had to leave school. Nor was I part of the "we all went to the same primary school so we are all good mates already" group, although I drifted around with some of them, eventually.

Instead, I was mainly part of the "random peculiar friends" group; the mingers/oddbods who end up hanging out together cos they don't fit in anywhere else: the tall ginger spotty one, the skinny bucktooth one, the gangly goofy one and me (the fat one with untameable hair).

My reports usually said "Jennifer has the ability to excel at this subject, if only she would stop distracting the other students".

(i.e., I spent most of the lesson giggling - and getting put out of the classroom for it, cowering in fear if the head nun came along the corridor)

But I passed with high As and a couple of Bs anyway Thumbs Up

As a side issue, I was dead chuffed to receive photos from my sister and one of my old school friends in NZ (the gangly goofy one, LOL) ... of my school's recent 50th reunion (which obviously I was unable to attend).

Everyone says both my younger sisters look older than me Thumbs Up yay

The 'prima' of the school, with only 9s and 10s in my certificates (our grades go from 4 to 10). The only reason I was tolerated was that I did the popular girls' language & maths homework. I also did some sports (ice hockey, baseball & 100m sprint), representing the school and my team in county & country competitions.

Never bunked, as I really liked school. The Finnish schools are quite a nice place to be and have a good atmosphere.

Never got invited to parties, though. Sad

I was always jealous of one of the girls at school: she was in the top academic class, she was doing Latin and Greek as well as French, history, art history, and a lot of other exotic subjects that those of us in the general commercial (shorthand and typing) class weren't able to do ... and she was a "prefect".

She was model slim and had perfect hair ... long and silky. And she was studious and quiet, yet popular with all the other academic geeks, as well as the teachers, cos she was so clever.

But when she was 19, she died of anorexia that nobody knew she had until it was too late.

Overachievement has its downsides.

An academic smart arse pyromaniac with an unhealthy fascination with psychopharmacology.

I had good friends, some who I still am very close to.

Arrow i was The one who "Could do better".
Arrow the one to light the fuse, so to speak, then sit back and watch.
Arrow was always sent to the 'on call' room during lessons "place for naughty students" funny that i was always in there with my brother, who was a year below me.
Arrow disruptive during cookery lessons, so many items in there to mess about with and distract my attention from making a stupid pizza or something stupid like that Laughing
Arrow was the one to '"accidently" set fire to something in science
Arrow the one who was looking at porn on the internet during IT lessons.
Arrow always late for school
Arrow never turned up to lessons that were pointless like RE(religious education)
Arrow get after school detentions and never go, they couldnt make me go LOL
Arrow wrote "mr jackson is a faggot" on the table in green pen, got called to his room the next lesson, denied it of course only to be the only one using a green pen that morning Rolling Eyes Laughing
Arrow wasnt allowed in the technology workshop as i "was a liability" so was left to my own devices with 3 other class mates who were classed as liabilitys too, in an unsupervised room with a CO2 fire extinguisher and board markers that coincidently fit perfectly into the flared tube of the fire extinguisher

in short...

....i was a bastard student.
nothing like that now though. growen up and take a serious outlook on life.
but i still say that i wish i was back at school. best days of my life so far.

Another 'could do better' kid. Also bullied until a bunch of kids called me into the sports hall for a boxing match with big Al. He had been boxing for about 6 months and thought he was well 'ard until.....
Pissed about during science lessons but passed Physics. Chosen for public speaking.

I was hard working but easily distracted. On my own I'd be sensible but put me with some other girls and I'd be messing about and giggling. I could be quite silly, especially in subjects I didn't enjoy, like Maths and French.

I didn't always listen to instructions given on tasks, so I remember spending a lot of time asking others what we were supposed to be doing, or guessing.

But generally I stayed out of trouble and got on with my work, and did alright at school.

Our year tended to split into three groups. The popular crowd, the inbetweeners and the geeks. I was an inbetweener. I used to join the popular crowd to smoke but I was never quite one of them.

It's funny how these things mattered back then!! Laughing
