This has got to be a dumbass question - but since I have never done an oil change before (in London or even England), I dont know!

I need to do an oil change for my bike. I have the new oil. I have a new oil filter. But what do I do with my old oil?

I may be a bit in the dark here - but I have a sneaky suspicion that pouring it down the drain will get your ass fined!

Can someone help me out? Smile

Cheers

Thinking Use it to stick the soles back on your shoes?

No, wait a minute ... thats tarmac, innit.

Uhmmmm ... Thinking Thinking

I know, I know!

Strain it through a sieve and put it in with the Sunday roast. Crisps up roast potatoes a treat! Your mum will love you forever.

Actually ... if you check your local council, they should have details of where the local oil-recycling or whatever point is. That is the environmentally correct place to take it.

DEFINITELY NOT down the drain in the misguided hope that it will stick to all the monster crocodiles in the sewer together and stop them from attacking.

i read in a newspaper a few years ago about a guy who pouring old petrol from his lawnmower into a drain in his garden. realising what he did he thought he'd just burn out the petrol so chucking a match into the drain afterwards ...... not a gd idea

luckily all it did was make a huge bang, no flying drain covers or exploding toilets.

Most local councils have a recycling area that will accept oil.
Under no circumstances should it be put in a container in the bin as waste goes to landfill or a recycle plant and your 5 litres can contaminate up to 200 cubic meters of waste

I normaly take mine to the local skip, theres a place for it.

I have a halfords thingy container thingy, that has a hole in the middle, that has a plug when you need to take it to the skip.

Saying that I did used to like burning it, I had a bid metal bucket, pour it to the bottom, few bits of paper on top to ignite it.

Only problem it burns for ages.......................

Like a day!!!!

Down the tip as said, location will be on your council website. If you bottle it up and throw it in the bin then they can't recycle the oil, so it's a bit of a waste, so don't go complaining about rising oil prices. Only thing I throw in the bin is the oil filter as the tip refuse to take it in any of the numerous skips or the oil section, so I'm given no option.

Pour it in the closest river, no one need know. Then use the filter as a fishing weight.
That's recycling the pragmatic way.

get a stick / bit of metal, and wrap something made of cotton around it (i.e. tea towel) soak the thing in oil and light it, makes a good torch that lasts for ages, and you just pour more on it to keep it going Very Happy
