I've just finished running in my DT after an engine rebuild, and would like to prise some tips from you on taking care of a 2 stroke engine properly. I often see phrases like "2 strokes need to be taken care of" thrown around, but details are seldom mentioned. So, let me pose a few questions and hopefully the answers will be helpful to the many people on here with 2 strokes.

1 - running it in. I was told by my mechanic to do 1000km. The first 500 taking in very easy, at about half the revs, and the last 500 progressively giving it a bit more gas. Is this sound? I've been revving to 7k and just finished the 1000km, can I redline it now?

2 - Oil. Keeping it topped up is a must, but does more expensive branded oil yield better performance and reliability?

3 - Warming it up is also essential. Is it better to do it idling or riding slowly?

4 - Engine rebuilds. How often and what kind?

There must be other points I've forgotten, too. Basically, post anything to do with care, maintenance and running of 2 stroke engines. Cheers! Thumbs Up

2. Oil comes in mainly two kinds. Synthetic and semi synthetic. Check your handbook to see which one they recommend. Always buy the best oil you can. I find it makes everything run better. 2 stroke oil mixes with the fuel to lubricate the piston. Im guess shit oil will give shit lubrication. thus further engine wear.

3. I normally leave mine idling while i get my kit on. Then sit on it and increase the revs to 3/4k in neutral. Once it is semi warmed up you will be able to drop in to first and ride slowly for a few minutes. You will know when it has warmed up properly, it will feel powerful.

4. Not too sure how often it will need a top end rebuilt. i keep hearing different times. someone else will know for sure

After 7k you could get a bit cheeky with the rev range, but just don't hold it there. It's just common sense that for the engine to sit properly, needs to be ran in. I was told 500miles until you could open her up a bit more....what i tended to do was bring it further up the range all the time, by the time im at 500 i've been taking it near the red.

On the topic of rebuilds, My nsr is now on 10,045 miles, and it hasnt had a rebuild. I had the piston rings, etc replaced at about 7,500 or so and it was all in good nick. The bike seems to be running fine. would anybody still recommend a rebuild now or in the near future, or not for a while?

In response to the first post, I have always used expensive oil, and not had any problems with the bike, I usually use Silkolene fully synthetic, or castrol TTS fully Synthetic, both about £11.99.

I second the Castrol TTs fully synthetic. Thats what i use. And it smells the best in my opinion Mr. Green

1 - This is debatable and no doubt people will argue. Some say it's best to use heat cycles, some say it's best to run them in hard, others say pussy foot about for 500 miles. I know from first hand experience that 500 miles is overkill, I usually do about 50 miles of varied riding with extra 2T oil in the fuel tank to help things wear in nicely - after that though I just ride it as normal and on all the bikes I've done it with have been fine.

2 - Again debatable, Castrol oil from Halfords has never let me down adn it's a good price.

3 - EVERY engine should be warmed up no matter what type. Usually a 5 minute idle and then drive slowly until your at operating temperature will do. I've seen people leave theyir cars/bikes tick over until they are up to temp though.

4 - A DT125 is an extremely reliable 2T bike, I have seen some wqith the standard top end with 20,000 miles on the clock. If you want to be careful I would replace the piston and rings every 10,000 miles but apart from that there's no worries with the DT just make sure the oil system is in good working order and it will rarely seize.

Probably a bit too easy on it. To run in rings they need to be pushed against the bore. This is done by the pressure from the burning petrol / air mix. Without being under any load (such as idling) the rings are not really being pushed into the bore.

Personally on the RS I stick to ~half the red line for the first 500km then add ~1000rpm every 100km after that so by 1000km it is being red lined.

Generally just decent reliability and a lower build up of carbon deposits in the engine.

Essential with any engine really. 4 strokes are worse in many ways as they have plain bearings all over the place which depend on a decent supply of oil at a decent pressure to survive, including on the cams which are a fair way from the oil pump.

Having said that I would say start up and ride off immediatly, and knock the choke off as soon as the engine will safely run without it. Idling will warm up the engine slowly and also mean running on the choke for longer (which dumps extra petrol into the engine, which is a very good degreasant, so washing the oil from the cylinder walls). Just keep the revs down until it is properly up to temp (you might well find it gets to temperature, then the temperature drops when the thermostat first opens).

Depends on the particular bike to be honest. For example the RS has large ports in the barrel which will give the rings a hard life, hence more frequent rebuilds.

All the best

So when do people recommend rebuilds? every 10,000 miles, 15,000 miles, 20,000 etc?
I dont want to push my luck with my NSR and find it suddenly jams on me or something.

I would probably do it around 10k, but on an NSR not worry about leaving it a bit longer. As it had new rings, etc, recently then you have plenty of time.

All the best

Yes be sure to warm up your bike for around 5 minutes idling, or whatever time it takes to get up near fully operating temperature.

Saying that, I'm a bit impatient and shabby with my rs50 2t, and tend to leave it warming the time it takes to get it out the garage and get my kit on before giving it gentle blips/revs (to around 4,000rpm) for a minute or so.

Recommend the blipping very occassionally, and like you say, ride off slowly to for the first mile or so, not exceeding over 7,000rpm imo.

Either way mate, you'll know when you haven't given it enough warming time by the response and feel the engine gives you. Thumbs Up Either that, or an engine cold seize a few miles down the road. Wink

Tristan.

cheers guys. Was leaving work the other day, turned the bike on, was running for a couple of minutes and one of the people from where i work came out started talking, then thought he would rev the bike, not sure what revs it got to, but it was rather loud! i was paranoid all the way home about it.

I would have punched them for their troubles, especially if they just walked up and helped themself without asking.

No point putting a set milage on a rebuild, since all engines wear differently. The only way to tell when an engine needs a rebuild is to do a compression test. The results of that will confirm the state of the engine including the crank seals.
