strange net issues.

I currently use my trusty old laptop to browse the net and irritate people online, sort of like now, thing is if I switch on any other PC (all desk top tower type PCs) my net connection instantly goes down on me no matter where the PC is located, I'm thinking wow thats a tad strange.

Any ideas as to why this might be? (I was going to cram in a wireless networking card into each of the other PCs but was just turning on other PCs for other uses (my desk top is used for photoshop, my old P166 is used for megadrive emulation).

Any ideas as to why this is the case? (note all my burning onto DVD software and MP3 converting software is on the desktop too).

Any thoughts?

So it is a cabled network going to a router?
How are the ip addresses assigned? Are they from a router or manually configured.
