TomTom, Route66 won't work with my GPS unit

decided to get satnav but don't wanna fork out 200 odd quid for a tomtom rider.

Installed Route66 7, and installed tomtom navigator 5.

when I start them they detect the GPS device via bluetooth but says no signal is being received.

any ideas why? is it because i'm indoors and in a low area?

Depends SiRF Star III chipset will work inside, make sure the bluetooth is paired and connected. Check the GPS status page to see if you are connected, you might have to select the correct bluetooth comport. Just done a quick check at the spec and its not going to be as good as SiRF Start III so put it outside for a hour to get a lock.

150129910922 is a bit bigger but will work in your pocket or in a bag on your bike.
270160795801 very small and takes Nokia phone battery which is handy again will work in your pocket or in a bag.

it should probably work ok.
if its set up right on the device and in the software then just go outside with it.


once you get the first gps fix itll get faster each time you use it as long as you use it regularly enough.

If its a clear day you should pick up within 10mins but they say give it an hour. The GPS should work just it might take a bit longer to get a fix. T1z3R is a gimp at a GPS/PDA company so if you get stuck am sure he can help.

When you first turn on a GPS (as in out of the box) it will take a long time to get a fix as you could be anywhere in the world. After that most will remember where you were when it was last turned on which so there's a massive reduction in how long it takes to get a fix.

A fairly typical GPS unit is going to need to be outdoors in a fairly open area (i.e. not forests, cities with big ol' skyscrapers etc) to work at its best/at all.

If you have a garden the easiest thing to do might be to just turn it on and leave it out there 'til it figures out where it is. No need to go walkabout.

I used to work for a GPS company and you should be able to pickup a sat lock within 10mins if you are outdoors, longest time is about 1 hour as it has to download data from the sats for the first time (called a cold start). Once you get a lock it should be much faster, ie if you leave the gps of for a month or so it will be like a cold start all over again. Just watch that the 2 applications you have installed are not running at the same time as they might stop each other from working (old tomtom used to lock the gps to its software). Check to see in the tomtom gps screen if the top right if a circle is spining (if not you are not connected to the BT GPS, if it is but no bars are signals appearing then its trying to get a lock.

FINALLY!

all sorted not bad, sat nav for 25 quid

the latest full UK map, loaded with this months speed camera definition files telling me where all the speed cameras are including DS2, Gatso, Truvelo, Mobile, Peek, SPECS, Speedcurb, Traffic Light and Watchman. giving me an audio and visual warning before i'm anywhere near them.

speed accuracy on the GPS unit is perfectly accurate (checked on the missus's speedo)

w00t, no more getting lost now
