Start up problems

I recently restored my computer back to factory settings. It had seemed the problem from before had gone away, but when i went to turn it on this morning it didnt load up, it turns on but the screen does nothing and the computer just does nothing except show a green light. I turned it off from the mains, tried again no luck,turned it off and noticed the router still lit up the light to recognise there is still a connection so i took my internet line out and turned the computer on and it started. Could this be the reason? surely not? help or advice is greatly appreciated.

if its not even going through the post id start by resetting the bios. id also check to see if ya gfx card is lose or buggered. if it boots up when you disconnect the lan cable try taken out the lan card and see if that does anything. its just a matter of elimination really. it helps to have spare parts to replace ya current ones to check for faults.

How do i reset the bios? what will that do? (im not that good with computers, i know a little....lol)

the bios tests and prepares the system for operation. the easiest way to reset it is to find the bios battery which looks like this

and take it out for half an hour. this will reset it back to the factory settings. its a bit of a bugger to get out with ya hand, best to use a screw driver.

Or use the restore factory defaults option if you have one in the bios.
Also remember to remove the power lead when you remove the bios battery or disconnect the main connector between the psu and motherboard (not much point in removing the batter otherwise....). The metal clip that holds the battery can get bent/broken easily so be careful....

As mentioned by Zeus it is a good idea to check the graphics card is seated correctly. Sometime this problem happens if the card has come slightly out of its slot by the monitor cable being pulled.

Your network card might be built in and if so cant be removed... Disconnect the cable to make sure the model/router isnt causing the problem...

Also try powering the unit without all peripherals connected like mouse, keyboard, printer or card readers etc. They (only a small chance) can cause systems to halt..
