A friend of mine lost his Aprilia RS50 a few days ago, it was chucked into the back of a van and was taken away by thieves right in front of him (which is weird because I've been in the exact same situation, same bike and everything!) Anyway we roamed the streets in search of it and found it on a local side-road just parked up outside a random house as if nothing had happened to it, there was no damage to the ignition however there were a couple of scratches on the fairings from the 'chucking' it into the van, obviously I'm chuffed for my mate as my bike robbery had a much worse outcome however I just don't understand what the fuck the thieves were doing? why would you steal the bike to park it up somewhere else. Why did they not take it to a lock-up/ garage or something? were they really stupid enough to just leave it back on the road to be collected later in broad daylight?

scum..

and why let them take it in front of you? I'd be running up to them with knives. lol, serious >_> scummy theives.

Very strange. Couldn't your mate identify the thieves in any way that took it off him?

For cars, thieves will often leave the car in a random car park with fake plates on for a week or two I believe.
This 'tests' if it has a tracking system on it - if it does, it's picked up, if not they go back later and collect it.

Can't see anyone trying that with a RS50 however.

Are tracking systems any good?

Was having a read in a magazine a few weeks back about tracking systems whilst waiting for my tyre to get done.

Do seem pretty good but expensive. Had an example of one bloke's car that got nicked and they managed to find it in Germany from the tracking system (as apparently its the case that they take them across the channel to sell on). If I had the money I'd probably fit one to my bike. Also (most) have a yearly subscription as well to pay.

Anyway, did the police make any enquiries at the houses where you're bike was found? Might have been someone who saw them leaving it there.

From what I've seen, not really. I wouldn't bother with one unless it made a big difference to insurance.

I think the GPS based ones are ok, but very expensive.
They work on a mobile phone based system I believe and you can also get mobile phone blockers I think - so a thief worried about them could possibly just jam them until they found a transmitter. (Pure speculation here, not sure on such technologies.)
