Well i really want to get a sports bike, i have been riding my FMX now for about 4 months and i just fancy something different. Ive got a pretty good idea what im looking for but just a bit shitted on the finance side.

My parents got me my current bike on black horse ( Embarassed ) and luckily i have paid about half of it off so far. Problem is my FMX has a broken indi (it looks fine, but its scratched a bit) and when i dropped it the day i got it i scratched the back fairing. Will this affect the price much?

Im determined not to go back to a Honda dealer, as they did mess me about a bit, so is it standard for me to go into another dealer, say my bike is on finance and get it arranged so i pay the rest off the new bike i get?

Sorry its a bit odd but im not sure what to do.. i like my FMX and i wont be changing it for a few months but its getting to the point where i was a sports bike and not a supermoto/offroad (previous bike was an XR125)

Thanks

Im in the same boat, my bike is also financed with blackhorse. Get your parents to ring them and get a settlement figure, sort the indicator out and if you want a new bike chop yours in, dealers normally pay off what you owe on the bike. But will the new bike cost more than yours? If so a personal loan from a bank would work out better.

If you're on a tight budget you should avoid dealers all together.

They will offer you less money for your bike than you could get by selling privately, and charge you a lot more for a new one.

Not often, but I am occasionally surprised how much they will offer for a bike - especially in a 'poor season' like this where they may still just take it straight out of a book.

It's even rarely that you can actually get a decent deal in a PX.

It's worth looking at, but I'd agree that generally you want to stick with private sale as well as buying.

Sometimes dealers will offer you a reasonable sum for a bike they don't actually intend to sell on, and they just write it off against the profit they make on selling the new bike to you.

So generally if you're getting a good part-ex price, it's just because you're being raped on the new bike you're buying Laughing

I guess like anything there are good deals and bad deals to be had though, worth shopping around.

Indeed, that's how it usually happens (well, actually they then add £1k to the price and chuck it straight back on the forecourt) ... but I have in the past been quite surprised when a dealers have offered to buy a bike for not much less than the sellers have got for them privately.

The more you spend at the dealers on the new bike the more they have to play with, so the cheaper you can get it for. The profit isnt in your bike, it is in the one they are selling you.

Go and see what you can get for your bike.
If there are any main dealers in the area for the bike you have go and ask them what a "buy back" figure would be. Normally quite low, but you never know. If it is a rare(ish) / popular bike a main dealer may offer a decent amount. Plus they can fix it a lot cheaper than a 3rd party dealer which will mean they can offer more if they want it.

If you do buy your new bike from a dealer check the other manufacturers for the bike you want. If it isnt their make they tend to mark them down a bit just to get rid of them.
