What is your company's policy for sickness pay? That is, full pay over statutory.

Mine is based on length of service:

0-6 month = 0
6 months - 1 year = 1 week
1-2 years = 2 weeks
2+ years = 3 months full pay, 3 months half pay

Does that sound reasonable? If you don't know, then you probably should!

I was talking to someone else today who gets only 1 week for up to the first 2 years.

I imagine the public sector is pretty generous. I never checked my contract when I worked for the MRC.

Sounds quite stingy. I get 10 weeks full sick pay a year pretty much from the start I think. Definitely get it after having done the probationary three months.

SSP only, no pay at all if not ill for over 5 days I think it is.. kinda sucks, used to get 5 full pay sick days per year which was reasonable for the odd day off ill...

was off today as i hurt my leg and cant walk right lol wont get paid a penny for it might have to be off tomorow too. wish we still had those 5 full pay sick days per year! im hardly ever off.

52 weeks sick pay, paid at normal salary rate, after the first year, reviewed after this time and can be (and is) extended. Benefits of working for a large multinational company.

That said, they paid me for 5 months after my crash, around 150 days or so, probably twice what I was entitled to at that point.

Our place tends to be relatively lenient with the length of sickness, it's frequency they don't like - lots of random blow-outs that look like you are just sleeping off a hangover!

We suffer a lot of sickness due to industrial injuries due to our environment - everything from bruises and sprained legs to broken bones and possible HIV infections.

My last employer paid 5 days sick pay per year - the MD reckoned each person was allowed one bout of flu each.

Add that to no pension and ridiculously long hours and I soon left for pastures new.

Royal Mail paid me sick pay, when I was suddenly and tragically bereaved, and was off for six weeks, and I'd not worked there for 2 years.

I think company sick pay at management discretion. SSP otherwise.


Suspicion is at an all time high, as day to day, you cant guarantee that everyone will turn up. Always poised to ring the agency. There is a hell of a lot of monday hangover phone in sick shite. One guy still gets his mum to phone in for him.

This works badly for those who are genuinely ill, and need the money. I had 2 weeks off recently, one was spent in hospital, the second was signed off by the hospital as a result. I could have done with a third, but by the second week, I was totally skint, and there is a mortgage to pay at the end of the day.

Another case of the masses ruining it for the few. Work ethic is generally shite in this country, no one really gives a f*ck.

If i've got 12 months with no sick then I get full pay for a maximum of 6 weeks, otherwise I get statutory only. I was off for 12 weeks following my eye injury. I got nothing for the first week, as I had been paid for a week sick earlier in the year, but for my 2nd to my 6th week I got full pay. weeks 7-12 were stat. £72 a week I think.
I'll be claiming 7 weeks loss of earnings in my claim against them.
We have something called the bradford points system at work. If you have several instances of sick you end up with shitloads of points and an automatic warning is issued, although they say that you are supposed to get a "talk" with personnel. Never heard of anyone recieving a talk though, only warnings.

We are fairly lucky at our place aparently.....

As an apprentice, we get full entitlement as do people that have served 3+ years. That being 13 weeks at full pay then everything else after that is SSP

Where as, if you aren't an apprentice and haven't worked 3 years then you just get SSP (sucks for some hey )
