CB500 Leaking Oil

Hey,

I recently bought a 1997 CB500. The bikes in great condition and i rode it the 250miles home without a problem.

However when i got home and came back to it the next morning i found a few drips of oil under the bike. On closer inspection i found it was leaking from the bottom of the oil filter. Its only a few drips but i'd rather it not leak at all!!

My question is do i need to replace the oil filter or should i just tighten it up slightly?

If i do replace the oil filter can i simply unscrew it, without draining the oil, and then reatach a new oil filter?

Sorry for the questions, i've always had kawasakis with internal filters.

if its leaking from the filter i would suggest buying a new one with new seals and giving the bike a mini service, new oil and filter will give it a nice clean out. to take an oil filter off you'd need an oil filter strap or tool as they get very tight, but when putting a new one on tighten it by hand or you'll never get the thing off.

I think im going to take the old filter off and replace with a new one then top up with oil. It only had its 16k major service about 700 miles ago!

I must admit i love the CB500. Its comfortable, economical and seems to be very reliable. I picked the bike up from Cheshire then went the long way home as i was seeing some relatives. I filled the bike to the brim on picking it up and after 100 miles filled it up again. It had used only £7 of fuel. So i was very happy.

Most of the journey home was motorway and the bike was more than happy sat at 80-90 and easily blipped up to well over 100mph. Wind blast was fairly harsh after 90 but wa still comfortable. Thankfully the guy had fitted a screen which took the edge off slightly.

When i got home i got off the bike feeling as good as when i'd got on it! No aching arms or legs, just a bit of a sore neck lol

Overall im very very happy with it. Granted its nothing beautiful to look at and nowhere near as fast as a modern sportsbike (Not that i thought it would be lol) However it got me home after 250miles in the saddle and in realitve comfort. In fact im even thinking of doing some touring on it next year!

I hope your as impressed with the CB500 as i am!

i can get one for £300, if i had the funds of course, it needs a bit of work to it, like forks and alternator, its crash damaged but not claimed on as its a learner, might take it off him soon, also got a lil cg 125 for £150 when i get funds again.
