ok so i'm looking to buy my first 400 and was wondering which to get.
I had my heart set on a VFR 400 (NC30) for months but have since found some good reviews on other bikes.

I definitely want a sport or sport-style bike (not motocross, supermoto or sport-touring style) but am now undecided as to which specifically to get.

Any suggestions or good/bad points about certain bikes?

Thanks in advance

I've never owned a 400. I very nearly did buy a gsxr400 with a blown top end once. But done a bit of research on it and they all seem to blow up after 20k. Confused Seem to be one of the more unreliable 400's out there, I wouldn't touch one with a 50ft barge pole and always reserve the right to say "Ha-ha" in a Nelson voice when someone's breaks down.

IMO the hondas seem to be the most 'reliable' but then again they seem to really difficult to work on.

ZXR's have always been my favourite but don't seem to last THAT much longer than the gsxr's. There is the ZZR400 but I suppose you would classify that as sports tourer?

I tend to look at reliability first when looking for a new bike but if that isn't a problem for you then I doubt you would be disappointed with any of them!

P.S This is an unbiased summary of my previous findings, anyone that says "ftw" will be biased as fook and you should choose to ignore 'em. Razz

Either ZXR 400 or GSXR 400. One of them I'm thinking of getting when/if I pass my test. Thumbs Up

I love the sound of the ZXR400s but it would be stupid to go on that argument alone!

The GSXR400s also seem nice but I have seen very few reviews on them... *goes to google now*

Thanks for input guys

EDIT: Are the GSXR400s actually in production still?

No, they stopped around 1996 i think.

I had one and it was great, sold it to someone off this forum actually.

They only thing that really goes wrong with them is the carb o rings have a habit of perishing.

TBF your better off searching on 400greybike.co.uk for info and tips and there are usually loads of 400's for sale there too.

I disagree, they're all so similar that its all the little things that have got to like most.
I have a ZXR400, its great, goes like stink and feels really good in the corners.
I have taken the scoop off my air box and now it roars Very Happy

It seems to be that the ZXRs, VFRs and RVFs are the main ones, although the others are great to i would choose one of those just got the sake of parts availability and support.

Get whatever is the best deal at the time if you havnt got your heart set on one particular one, i originally wanted a VFR but ended up getting the ZXR, havnt looked back atall Smile

ive got a GSXR400 from 1984, the first ever year they were built, and it still runs! although it overheats, leaks oil and the water mixes with the oil, it can still out-do most 400's on the road today!
although my problems sound major, they arent too bad.
plus it was £200, pay a bit more and you will get something decent!

There has been one sitting in Bats Motorcycles for an age. At least a year. It looks tatty, but it does have a certain charm to it.

Mind you its been there for so long it must look even worse in real life than it does in the pictures on their website.

The VFR400/CB-1 Honda's have Gear Driven Cams. If you don't want to hear a whistling sound while you ride around forget it. Smile

The best advice would be don't tie yourself to one model, just try and find a bike in reasonable condition and don't pay over the odds for it.

Agreed. Thumbs Up

Asking 'which is the best 400' you'll always get people saying 'get the one i've got, they're the bestest!'.

They are all decent bikes, each with their own little foibles. I'd happily own a decent example of any of them, but the CBR ticks my boxes at the mo.

Defo check out 400greybike and give MarJay's Guide to 400cc Sportsbikes a glance over too.

Good luck Thumbs Up

i just bought a vfr 400 1990 and i love it sounds beautiful, rides so so fast in comparison to my cbr 125 lol but i think the cheapest option would be old gsxr the most reliable would be vfr due to engines "bulletproof" so i hear but hard to work on but if there was another 400 to chooose it would have to be a zxr cause they look sexy as anything and apparently the fastest 400 out there Smile
