Following on from the thread about stolen goods, I thought I'd as the question copyright theft or piracy.

So is all your software bought and paid for?

Have you never download a movie or tv program?

Have all your mp3's been paid for?

Do you own or have you licenced the image you use for your avatar?

To fit in with the other poll there are no grey areas in the poll, a simple yes or no. So if you answer yes to all these questions vote yes, if you answere no, vote no.

Yes it's all legit the XP came with my laptop, I can't afford M$ so I use opensource products such as OpenOffice. I only own 10 DVDs and they were all gifts, I don't like downloaded music so I buy CDs cheap off Amazon and rip them for use on my media player. I also copy my CDs for use in my car, as if they get nicked I've lost nothing and the "master" copy as it were stays in mint condition if I need to rip/copy again.

Thief!

Currently there is no "fair use" in the UK so ripping cd's even those that you own is still technically copyright infringment.

Although by the same rule flicking through the channels on the tv in the ad breaks is theft of content, and surfing an unsecured wireless network is theft of service.

If I recall correctly by law you even have to erase something you have recorded off the tv within 7 days if you want to stick to the letter of the law.

Surely that's simply commonsense? You're making use of something that you have no permission to utilise.

Sore point with me, this subject.
Most of my music, is from bought CDs, and some are paid for downloads, mostly from HMV.
The rest is from Limewire, and the simple reason is thus.
I am more than prepared to pay for my music, but a lot of stuff I like, is not available from the legal sites for various reasons. So my message to the music industry is, if you want to sell it, make it fucking available for me to buy. If what I want is not available, then I'll get it free, and you get fuck-all.
One major example of this idiotic thinking from the music labels, is the Beatles music. STILL unavailable to download, and there are many more examples like it.
So until they pull their corporate fingers out, they should stop bleating on about P2P sites. Evil or Very Mad

All a bit of a non-question. Using copies of software/music/whatever involves no loss to the copyright owner. You might as well argue that everyone who doesn't buy an Aston Martin Vantage is depriving that company of their livelihood.

Last time I looked at an EULA, it was all get-clauses for all responsibility for something you only licence - not own - so even if you pay for software, they're trying to fuck you over before you even open the box.

Serves 'em right if people don't play their game.

All my MP3s are from a Russian site, 9p a shot. Aw, those poor pop-stars, I'm inpoverishing them. Still, better that than paying over 70p a shot here in the UK, and having MP3s locked to one brand of player (get to fvck).

Two major apps I have (£400 jobbies) are cracked downloads. The XP on this PC is legit, but the one on my wife's is cracked. All the games on this PC are legit.

The world of software is an orchard through which we roam, scrumping as we please.

Actually when you make software your loss is made before you evene release the application, you spend a couple of years developing an application then hope to god you sell enough copies to compensate you for the time lost and with luck turn a profit.

So although there is a large number of people that wouldnt have bought your software if they had to pay for it, there are many that would and those are the ones that you can consider a genuine loss.

That said software is over priced, eula are unfair, and the likes of Microsoft deserve everything they get.

My point was that there are many while shouting "lynch em" to those of us that we would buy stolen goods as long as we believe nobody had been hurt, those same people are listening to stolen music running on stolen software on a stolen operating system.

Just seems a little hypocritical.

And my point was that you are inventing a fabricated problem.

I haven't seen anyone here demanding a pogrom against everyone buying knocked-off consoles - simply a couple of people saying that they wouldn't, and the odd person like me pointing out the flaws in their justifications for theft.

Still, don't let the truth get in the way of a good rant eh?
