Anyone know how to do this? The lever seems very slack, can pull it in all the way so the lever hits the grip.

The front one is also very tight, takes a lot of effort to pull it in even slightly, although it seems to stop the bike OK. Is this normal as it seems a lot more so than peds I've ridden before? It's a hydraulic front brake, it has never been used - maybe that could have something to do with it?

Also, is it an MOT failure if both brake levers seem to have quite a lot of up/down travel in them (as in, I can wiggle them vertically)? What could be causing this?

is it a drum or disc the rear? cable controlled or hydrolic
if its a drum, then have a look at where the cable goes into the back of the swing arm, there is a little lever with a bolt on it.
squeeze the brake lever and hold the other lever in position and then tighter the bolt.
easy as pie

as the man above says.

A good reference point is to set it so the rear brake light comes on just as you start squeezing it.

That way you know you're getting all the brakes without fear of it dragging.

This works for neally all peds that have a cable-operated rear drum.
