Great, guess I'll put my bike away for winter and get some ice skates instead. Rolling Eyes

York is a nightmare for icey roads as it is, especially on the outskirts where the council argue with other councils whose job it is to grit, and patches are just left.

Goddamn 'cost-cutting', council tax is extortionate too. Evil or Very Mad

Do other areas have better luck with their councils gritting policy?

Nearly two years ago there was a tragic RTA not too far from where I live. Some cyclists including a schoolboy were killed by a car which had skidded on an icy patch. Failure to grit the road sufficiently was blamed.

The important question is....if they are making cutbacks, what are they spending the savings on?

Regards

Probably more huge bendy buses that struggle to negotiate city centre junctions (and occasional get stuck under the city wall bars - an important city thoroughfare is got closed off because of this), more ridiculously wide cycle lanes carving through the tight city roads.

More dumbass roadworks come the end of the financial year, strangling the traffic for weeks on end and leaving us with road surfaces that are worse than before.

Certainly not on education, if the cheques I was forever writing to my eldest's school last year were anything to go by. Oh sorry, they did spend £4million last year - on developing ONE comprehensive school.

Blimey, am I ranting? Think I need a weekend! Laughing

Get onto your local counclor and get fighting it.

Could well end up costing the council more than they save in damaged street furniture.....

Where the driver skids, hits and simply drives on...

I also live in York,
Those huge buses also seem to dump more diesel than the engine uses, the roads are always slick on its routes.
when it rains the roads are rainbow coloured.

Holgate bridge has been under repair for ages longer than it should.

they will never dual the outer ring road never mind how many people complain, they seem to be more bothered about banning Foi Gras (Pronounced : Fwaa Graa) cos its cruel to geese.? (it's some pate stuff for posh people)

York is going to turn into the next Harrogate or Bournemouth, full of old people because they are the only people that will be able to afford to live there.

Rant ends

At least York hasn't had any riots recently Wink

On topic reminds me of the recent floods in Hull (aka Kingston-upon-Hull).
Turns out an investigation found most of the flooding down to poor drainage. Now the council had sold off it's fleet of drain cleaner vehicles leaving one one and proclaimed this as a great saving. Now they had to buy a few new ones to do the job that should have been done in the first place.

Makes we wonder what sort of 'expenses' these cost cutting councillors are on Thinking Rolling Eyes

the Grit the council use up here in Scotland is almost as bad as ice, they use a special mix with the grit that helps to keep it stuck to the road. you can also buy the same stuff in supermarkets, its called Margarine
