Better off with a Cat as it's less likely to fall apart.

Hi

Yes, got one. Bought as a cheapy for commuting. Mine is the slightly newer version with the letterbox shaped headlight. Mine is now up to about 51k.

Common problem is the gearbox. 2nd gear from memory. Plastics are difficult to find 2nd hand. Rear tyre is a 150/60 18, and should be a V or Z rated tyre (and the only people who still make that size / speed rating are Bridgestone with the BT014, and they are not cheap). Suspect most just fit H rated tyres (rated for 130mph, FZR should do a touch over 140mph).

Weak clutch. Typical Yamaha. Finish is not great but OK. Watch out for warping brake disks (occasional problem, was far more of a problem on the FZ750 and FZR1000 with 320mm disks). Exhaust rots.

Airbox can be a pig to get back on he carbs.

Had occasional issues with the gearchange pedal starting to seize up on the pin it pivots on. Easy to fix and grease up, just seems to need doing again shortly afterwards! Mine also seems to eat clutch cables.

I like the handling. Brakes are fine. Performance is fine (yes there are quicker bikes around, but it is quick enough and produces power in a fairly nice way). Not bad on petrol and a decent size petrol tank.

What is that on the swinging arm of that one?

All the best

Keith

For the price of a Thundercat you could buy 3 FZR600s.

All the best

Cheers Keith,
Quality info as usual! Cool

Yh im buying this one for £500, its a 91 model with 25000mile on it, from all the pics ive got of it, it looks mint for a old bike. Im only buying it for a cheep run a round, just untill i get things sorted with my compensation etc (... long story). Untill i get some more money for a better bike etc.

But i think for £500 it looks well worth it, and from what you have said about them, they dont seem a bad bike. I will have to check out the gearbox, like you said. Also about the tyre size, the tyres on them are they 17" (standed size)?
If not, hows the handling with the standed tyres on them??

Cheers,
Adam.! Very Happy

Looks good for the price.

Handles nicely on the stock wheels / tyres. Front is a 17" as standard, while the rear is an 18". Could be someone has stuck on the back end from an FZR600R or Thundercat.

All the best

Keith

One race rep paint job that hasn't aged badly.

All the best

I had a 1990 FZR600 it was a lovely bike. I can't really add anything to the post as Keith has said the same things I would have said.

I did two European tours on it covering a total of 5500 miles and didn't have any problems on either of my trips.

My only gripes with that bike are like Keith says the airbox is a bastard to get back on and my rear tyre was 18". I got the BT014 which is a soft compound which lasted around 3000 miles and cost £110 a pop.

My mate has a Tcat but I always felt they looked old manish.

Cracking bike wouldn't say no to another one.

Really? I always thought the FZR600s were fetching around £1100 in which case I thought the Cat was better value as it's only about £100 more and is a more modern bike.

Yeah I thought the same thing but relented to looking for one when I couldn't find any of the other bikes I wanted. Saw one on eBay in Red/White and just had to have it.

i can second that as on my fzr the 2nd gear slips out, and i cant use 6th gear anymore, if its been abused just like anyonther bike, it will have faults, the fzr 600 is a decent bike, just look after it and you'll be fine. Thumbs Up www.fzrarchives.com any probs go there for almost instant help Thumbs Up

Which would be an OK price for an FZR600R, and cheap for a Thundercat. Older FZR600 can be had for under half that quite easily.

All the best

Got mine for 600 quid Shifty Laughing

For the age and price, the bike sounded good, handled ok (would have been better if it hadn't had a square rear tyre), very easy to dismantle and tinker with and does everything it says on the front of the tin.

I bought it on impulse as I wanted a cheap sports bike, a 600cc seemed ok at the time. The ride back along to the M25 seemed laboured compared to the might and grunt of the ZXR750 and it felt small and quite fragile. Yes it may be easier to throw a smaller bike into bends but it just lacked 'presence' and didn't feel planted at slow speeds.

I'm not being negative just because me and the bike got off to a bad start, but an impulse is not always the best way of selecting bikes and in fairness, I wouldn't want another FZR. There are many people on here with one that love them, and www.fzrarchives.com/ipb is a fantastic source of information for you should you get stuck Thumbs Up

Ride safe and lets see some piccys.

I stand corrected. Sorry. So what are the differences between the FZR and the FZR-R?

Very little the same. The engine is the same basic unit (as is the Thundercat), but for the FZR600R and Thundercat it was heavily revised with a shorter stroke.

Frame is totally different. 17" wheels front and back on the R. Different bodywork.

All the best
