I know that some people get insurance where by they are insured on any bike they ride, be it their own or a friends. I have heard in particular of this being an additional extra with some bennetts policies. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Most brokers will offer this, though not all may be able to get a good quote.

Remember it can be useful to have different 'streams' of insurance, so that if you do have to claim, you still have some NCB to use.

The principle on this is that you insure your bike and depending on the policy you get you are insured to ride other bikes. The rules are generally that the other bike has to be insured by the owner, you cannot be the owner, you obviously need the owner's permission and the cover is 3rd party only.

Oops, my bad, didn't read properly.

As trixie says, the policies that do this will only cover you to ride other people's bikes. Not all policies say the other bike must be insured by someone else, but some do.

Plenty of companies do offer this, but there's often both a minimum age and minimum cc limit of your own bike that you're insuring - it comes as an extra with a normal bike policy.

Bennets are one of the few companies that don't offer 3rd party cover on other bikes. Neither do ebike.

Carole Nash do but the bike you insure has to be 350cc or bigger to qualify for it.

Best thing to do is to specifically ask when you are ringing round for quotes. If it's important to you (it was for me as apart from trying out mates bikes I needed to be able to ride the OH's - until he went and swapped them for new ones that I can't reach the ground on! Rolling Eyes ) it's the only way you are going to be sure.

Hmmm Confused I am sure they stated I was insured to ride other bikes on my policy as long as they were insured by a third party.
Just looked at the documents but it doesnt say I can or cant anywhere?

It's a multibike policy currently with two bikes on it and I can add three more

Well that was the main reason I left them in July 2006. I had just come out of my restriction and was moving from my 250 to my first 400 (but keeping the 250 insured & road legal so mine was a multibike policy with 2 bikes on it too) - they told me then that they didn't offer 3rd party cover on any of their policies. I hadn't been bothered when I was on the 250 because the restriction meant that I couldn't ride any of my OH's bikes or most of my mates' anyway but once the restriction was up it was quite important to me that I would be able to do this. Ebike were the cheapest quote but they refused to include the 3rd party cover too so I went with Carole Nash in the end.

When I was up for renewal in June this year I was just in the process of buying my new (800cc) bike so I thought I'd give them a call again. Once again I specifically asked about 3rd party cover to ride other bikes and was told they still don't do it. Confused
