Gators

Hi looking to get some gators for the NTV since winter is sort of upon us soonish....

#1 do I have to remove the yokes or will my brief thought of removing the front wheel and pulling them up work?

#2 is it possible to get gators that you don't need to remove bits off iwhere I can probably super glue/gaffa tape them together at the back?.

#3 and to end it all do fork gators actually work ie prevent pittage and crap getting onto the stanchion thus letting tiny amounts of crap into the fork oil/leg and buggering your fork seals, last fork seal + bushes jobbbie was horrible and I don't fancy doing it anytime soon.

At your next MOT the examiner may be very suspicious because usually gaiters are only fitted as part of a bodge to disguise knackered stanctions and or seals. In theory if they are cable tied in place he can't investigate further but it might piss him off to the point where he looks for excuses to fail your bike on something. Generally you have to drop the forks to fit them btw.

bugger nah my MOT man knows I look after me bike , I just don't want pitting on the stanchions from salt even though I clean them regularly.

If you've got a centre stand to take the front wheel off, you can always slide the forks down if needed.

I've been wondering about them for my FX, after repairing (or trying to) pitted forks.

You need to remove the forks. Yes I have them in. Yes I fit them on all my work bikes.

If you remove the front wheel and mudguard, it's just a case of loosening four more bolts to drop the forks down and out.

Yes they do keep the salt and crap off. Water can still get in though because by necessity they have to have holes in or they'd explode when your forks compress.

I always used to coat the stanchions in waxoyl then do up the gaiters to prevent corrosion. Others I know give them an occasional scoosh of WD40 by sticking the straw through the 'breather' hole.

Just fitted some to my NTV, best thing i ever did, no more worrying about crap getting into the seals or rust on my fork tubes.
Drop the front end and fit them, you know it makes sence.
