This post is SPAM:
Use this reason only if you spot a blatant piece of unsolicited commercial advertising, similar to what you would term junk mail.

Last few days I've noticed people going crazy with the spam rating button. Why?

Spam, for me, is the "cialis $4.99 clik on site of www.spammycockenlargersite.com' stuff, very obvious to spot, often posted by spam-bots rather than real people.

I've seen two genuine looking posts about other specific forums get hit mercilessly by the spam button. What harm are they doing? Ok maybe they should ask the admin first, but they aren't malicious spammers as we know them.

Then bikerjoe the cowboy gets hammered for his poxy lights thing, sure maybe we find them a bit useless, but I clearly saw he wasn't selling, he just had a lot of enthusiasm for them.

Yet the bloke posting about his spraying business, got tons of positive (along with a a couple of spams). Yet he's clearly posting to sell a product/service!!! Makes no sense whatsoever (I don't think his was actually spam either mind).

Are we so cynical on here that we jump at any opportunity to spam rate?

What if I made a post about how I was starting a mitten-knitting business, giving prices and contact details? Would I get spam-rated?

FFS people, get a grip.

Spam to me is somebody who signs up on the first post telling about a new forum/new product and then f*cking off again never to be seen such as here. https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=127582&highlight=

Although i've noticed people follow like sheep, if they see the topic blobs gone yellow, they'll be nosey, then follow the herd and also vote it a Thumbs Down just to fit in.

I agree, it is spam if a user had registered simply to advertise and post links, never if it is a regular user.
I don't think spam is even an issue on this site, I only actually see one every so often.

If it is a regular user that has posted up a link about a business they have or a new and interesting product they have seen then that is simply networking/'word of mouth' and I would welcome that as a valuable part of a forum.

It is simply fact of the forum that there are sad people who seem to exist on here simply to point out spelling mistakes, reposts and anything that they regard as spam.

if they were bog stand mittens....the type yoru granny would knit, I reckon you would get spammed, however.....if they were magic mittens made out of magic wool, that would benefit some on here....lets say...hmmm made some riders corner better or make their bikes go faster, then I dont think they wouldnt spam you for it. Wink

but I know what you mean, I sometimes see spam ratings and think....'why have they done that?'

Come on, you can't be that naive?

Generally if a moderator see's a SPAM thread it'll get removed. Bikerjoe's "Amazing LED Lights" thread was left for it's entertainment value.

I agree the ratings are often used incorrectly, though.

I agree Mudskipper, I personally go easy on the Spam rating after all genuine unsolicited stuff does get removed by the admins. occasionally though there are threads/posts that are left and they're to be considered fair game. The two posts you mentioned re: other forums will probably get removed or just be those one off posts by the new member. The respraying one, yeah I agree I thought that was a bit spammy but hey the guy was networking and offering a potentially valuable service so I left it. The spaccy torches touted by bikerjoe appeared at first to be spam reason being his whole "snake-oil" approach to the thing:

This is a great invention, and one which motorcyclists will find very useful!

These little lights can be carried in a small pouch on your bike. They are VERY bright!

When your bike breaks down on a dark road or along a freeway, you can place three RED ones behind your bike...

... blah, blah, blah.

So I rated it spam, afterwards he got a bit of a battering from others and I felt maybe I'd been harsh, so I tried to add some reason. His response told me where to get off, so I didn't feel the need to apologise and if I could withdraw my rating I now obviously wouldn't.

At the end of the day the ratings are there for members to quickly and effortlessly get their point of view across and sometimes spam is as close as possible to how they feel about a thread. There are some however who do seem spam happy... Rolling Eyes

I think the main problem Bikerjoe had with that post is that when you see the post date and the date the user joined are the same, and the post sounds like a QVC advert you don't usually read all of it, just mark it as spam :-

When your bike breaks down on a dark road or along a freeway, you can place three RED ones behind your bike where they will serve as road flares to help prevent someone from hitting your bike, and a fourth WHITE light will serve as a troubleshooting light, or for reading instructions in a dark roadside call box, or whatever!

Here are some photos:

EIGHT red Pak-Lites in my dark driveway, set up as road flares.

Eight lights with batteries, and an eyeglass case.

Neatly tucked into the case for storage!

Tell me that doesn't sound like spam?
