 |
|
Any suggestions?,
I already circumvent the royal mail by dumping money directly into bank accounts but stuff still does have to come through the post most irritatingly.
And they are having a big strike next week ALL week , monday to Friday, then probably another.
I don't paypal either nor live in london thus dispatch riders are not an option either.
Anybody know of a company other than Initial , that will courier stuff to me fairly cheaply?.
Any suggestions?

slight hijack of the thread.
Since the PO want to strike a little more, I need to find a cheap alternative to them to send out items of clothing up to 3-4kg. Any suggestions?
Our business is now really suffering because of the strikes |

hmm not sure if this helps but i normally use parcel2go to send big packages,
i.e. computer/bike/car parts.
Max weight they take is 25kg's and box sizes is max 100cm
standard delivery takes about 1-2 days and is about a 11 quid.
economy takes about 2-4 days but only costs about 6 quid.
All via DHL too

City Link offer a next day delivery service for £9 (upto 1Kg) or they do a pay on delivery service where your customer pays them for the carriage on delivery.
Their website is here: City Link
PDF download for prices here: Tariff.pdf
and then there's Business Post - Homeserve though I don't know what the rates are.
But of course if we all start using these services it'll just pay into the hands of RM management and they'll lose more business to the deregulated commercial outfits and more postal staff will come under the axe. Personally I think the Royal Mail is excellent VFM, and I have a lot of sympathy for the workforce but if they bring the country to a standstill they'll curry favour with no one. ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |

I'm not sure why everyone I speak to seems to sympathise with the posties unconditionally. I've known/know a few postmen/women, and they paint a picture of a relatively well-paid job with plenty of perks, albeit with weird working hours. The vast majority of PO employees that I see walking around Harrow look like a frakkin' disgrace, swaggering about with messy uniforms mixed in with chavvy civilian clothes.
The Telegraph printed the following list of 'Spanish Practises' that Royal Mail allege are at the heart of the dispute - while the company bosses are obviously going to be biased, if even some of it is true, the whole strike is one giant piss-take:
| Quote: | Royal Mail provided The Daily Telegraph with a list of 12 of the 92 "Spanish practices" which it claims are now at the core of the worst postal strike for nearly two decades:
* Two or three hour minimum daily overtime - so if 30 minutes of actual work is required and completed, then between two and three hours' payment is demanded;
* An additional allowance claimed for using particular vehicles - regardless of whether the individual has actually driven the vehicle;
* Automatic overtime if mail volumes reach a certain level - regardless of how many ordinary working hours remain that day;
* If a delivery round is finished before the end of the paid shift, the employee expects to be able to go straight home. But if it takes 10 minutes longer two to three hours' over time is claimed;
* Set overtime level is claimed at Christmas, even if there is no need for any additional hours and no extra hours are worked;
* An additional two hour payment on Easter Saturday - regardless of whether any work required;
* No flexibility between different parts of the same sorting office - if an employee sorts letters for a particular postcode, they will not sort for the adjacent postcode, even though both activities are often in the same room;
* Signing in and out for a shift on arrival - so that no record of actual hours worked exists;
* Collection drivers expect overtime pay for doing collections outside usual route - even if it is done within usual working hours;
* Overtime to cover for an absent colleague - a full day is claimed, even if only half day needed and worked;
* Ban on any cross functional working, even of similar tasks under the same roof;
* Additional meal and grace breaks as custom and practice

I'm not surprised they're striking, mostly because back home (my parents house) the local sorting office and post workers are very very frequently on strike.
It started a couple of years ago when some guy got sacked for something (it was pretty unfair I just can't remember it) they got their demands for the strike.
Then every 3-4 months they'd strike again and again whenever they want something.
It's annoyed me this strike cause now I'm stuck waiting for my text books that I ordered.. I need them for my course so it's kinda really annoying..
If I can I use a courier like citylink, mostly because for a few quid more you can guarantee (within a couple of hours) when they will come deliver what you've bought. Plus if you happen to be out when they come they often come back again at the end of their route to see if your in then.
If mister james is right then they are taking the piss a bit in some places :/ ____________________ Past: 55 Sym Jet, 91 ZZR250, 03 NSR125R. Present: 97 ER-5.

Yup agreed, if they're hanging on to that antiquated crap then stuff 'em, I was led to believe it was over pensions and massive job cuts (c.40,000) due to the agressive restructuring of the business imposed by management keen to compete against the commercial couriers. ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |
