Crash and theft stats are also used to create the groupings, as does the cost of building and repairing the vehicle.
I can only speak for my company but I have never seen a significantly higher group car being cheaper to insure that a lower group car however there might not be much between the cost of insuring a group 3 car worth £15000 and a group 10 car woth <£1000 if the rest of the variables remain the same.
We operate with the insurance group bringing up the base (gross) rate for the vehicle based on the rating area/district with the rest of the variables ie value, security, driver age/experience etc applying loadings or discounts to the gross rate with the ncb being the last variable used.
Lower vehicle groupings will always mean a lower base rates as far as i know. You dont premium load the vehicle, you premium load the driver, that is unless you're Quinn. ____________________ Past: '96 Thundercat, '02 ZX636R (A1P), '58 KTM 690 SM LC4 Current: '06 ZX636R (C6F)

Well yeah its not clear cut and there are exceptions that prove the rule but 99 times out of a 100 if all other factors are the same if the group is less then the premium will be less.
This is magnified for young and new drivers as the premiumn loading is applied to the driver based on the gross base rate for the vehicle.
The groupings are indicators only and most insurers will have their own stats for rating vehicles for example most insurers including the company i work for hit BMW X5's hard due to them being the most stolen vehicle per unit sold in the UK so even though a similar vehicle may be the same group and value as an X5 it will likely be a cheaper premium.
Anyway..... first car wise providing you're under 25 you're prob best sticking to the small hatchbacks under 1.6l, as a rule Ford KAs tend to be cheap insurance-wise as they are a low grouping, worth feck all and the older ones have lots of plastic bodywork so are cheap to repair ____________________ Past: '96 Thundercat, '02 ZX636R (A1P), '58 KTM 690 SM LC4 Current: '06 ZX636R (C6F)
