I find events like the current protests in Burma to be inspiring. The quiet courage shown by the monks, nuns and others is wonderful and terrifying to behold. It is the kind of courage shown by Martin Luther-King and his followers, and by the students in Tiannamen Square, and is the kind of courage that ultimately changes things.

Not decrying the work of the armed forces at all when it comes to peace-keeping or fighting for democracy, but that is a different kind of courage.

I have strong political beliefs and a passion for democracy, but it is very easy for me to spout my views here in the safety of the UK. I wonder if I would be quite so brave if expounding my beliefs meant that there was a real possibility that I would be shot.

To the Burmese people (and all the others) I applaud you for your bravery.

you know listening to the radio this morning it said police and soldiers are beating crowds with batons.....

But didn't we have a similar thing happen in London with the country side alliance... and also in the past with the miners / poll tax riots?.

I remember the cover of a news paper showing a cop with his baton with a face as if he was enjoying it, and also with steel batons wihtout the rubber coating.

Would have thought more would have replied to this by now.

Seems the protests are getting violent (on the government's side). What I find interesting though, is the US's highly vocal response to the attacks, which is imposing (largely ineffective) sanctions. Seems the US is taking the opportunity to look like the good guy for once.

Sadly, sanctions are largely useless. Burma may be isolated from the western world but as long as it's being sustained by China and India, it'll do just fine without our help.

The question "what can the U.N do?" came up the other night on question time;

To which the political nerd then spouted that they'd try and boycott the olympic games in china 2012. The chinese wont sanction Burma cuz they're just as Corrupt.

Its shocking that the burmese government can get away with it, but with our armed forces spread between iraq and afghanistan I cant see it being Britain coming to the rescue.

actually it said 200 at most

Its funny how on the news, black water defence contractor shooting iraqi civilians was described as an incident, but with a regime who we are hostile to, their attempts to maintain order are referred to as atrocities.

None of the leaders will help this situation. Going into Burma means going in to China.
