Okay heres the thing. M wants a sports 400 for her first bike, I have the VFR400 NC30 which I still love but I can't decide whether I should let M have my VFR and we buy me a bigger bike, or whether I should keep my VFR and let M buy herself another sports 400 (CBR,ZXR,VFR etc).

I am sure I will make my own mind up, but I just wondered what you lot thought, only gonna have around £2000 to spend though.

Have you ridden any bigger bikes...
Okay I'm probably a bad example, but once you've ridden a 600+ for a bit you wont want to go back. (just don't let M near it, or it'll be her getting a 600 and you staying on the vfr Smile )

I have ridden Niges CBR 600 but didnt find it any more exciting than my VFR, also an advantage of keeping the VFR for myself is thats its easy to GMKD (however I am sure I could learn on a bigger bike). I dunno what I would buy if I got a bigger bike, fully faired sports bikes are obviously more expensive (look nicer though) so I may go for more of a streetfighter style bike.

I'd say let M have it, the VFR that is, before anyone slyly quotes me on that.
And the added bonus to that is, you'll still be able to see and ride it anyway.
And she well know what the bikes history is i supose.

You can probably pick up a ZXR750 or ZX7R for under £2k...or maybe an older Gixer750...

If you want to go the streetfighter route, then how about an older Hornet9, or Bandit12?

I reckon that M should get a CBR/VFR...I haven't been riding as long as you, so I'm currently still saying that a 400 is enough for me...anything over 135mph gets uncomfortable anyway (well, maybe not the bigger bikes), and you can always get more acceleration from changing the sprockets...

I've been looking at <£2000 bikes recently.
Somethings to think about:
CBr600 (keeps value well so most fairly expensive)
zx6 (f models can just about be got from £2000)
FZR600 (older, not very comfortable apparantly)
zx9 (old ones, pretty lardy and not *that* sporty)
Thundercat
CBR900 (I got quoted £680 tpft insurance with 1ncb on the first quote, cheap company though)
FZR1000 (bit lardy, off the pace on handling for modern bikes)
zxr750 (from £1200ish, but very uncomfortable)
I reckon it's at least worth getting some test rides... you'll never know umless you try it Smile

Has nige got an old cbr?... if so that's probably why you didn't notice much... there's a pretty significant jump from a vfr to my zx/alex's r6.

I'm sure you'll get used to gykd quickly enough (ie a couple of laps around a roundabout Smile)

cheers for that G.
Niges CBR is a 1996, a lot more power than my VFR, but doesnt feel a *lot* faster, probably due to the fact that it is so comfortable and quite upright compared to the riding position of the VFR.

I am currently thinking about something like a yamaha TRX850 they seem to get quite good write ups and are a little *different* so wont be too common. ( can be a good thing or a bad thing I suppose).

O yeah, I had been looking at trx's as well (kinda gave up as ^the list^ had got pretty big allready)

I've seen some from £1750, which is apretty decent price for what you get.
I find I notice the power in a more upright riding position (presumbly because you are more in line with the acceleration when hunched over)
I noticed teh acceleration on my klr a lot more than I do on teh zx. Of course the duble bubble etc does help Smile

Tin, the ZXR750 is very cheap to buy and insure (£40 on top of my current premium if I got one), but the ZX-7R is right out on it's own and can be quite pricey to buy plus it's way over the ZXR750 and ZX-6R insurance wise.

The FZR600 is actually quite comfortable and handles very well (this is the foxeye model), the ZXR750 is by far the most uncomfortable and I'd never move up to one for that reason.

I've seen ZX7Rs going for about £2k, which is the only reason why I mentioned it Confused ...they were probably all ex-race bikes though Smile

Well the VFR will probably be the bike in the best condition and M will be happy to have it so there is no problem there (she wants a sports 400 anyway). I (should I say we?) wont be buying another bike until the new year anyway which gives me chance to save some money and decide what I actually want.
