Hex is short for hexadecimal, also known as base 16. Useful if you work programming computers.

Basically you count in units, then multiples of 16, then multiples of (16 * 16) then multiples of (16 * 16 * 16), etc . So you would count 1,2 , 3 ,4 ,5 ,6 ,7 ,8 ,9 ,A ,B ,C ,D ,E ,F ,10 ,11 ,12 ,13 ,14 ,15 ,16 ,17 ,18 ,19 ,1A ,1B ,1C ,1D ,1E ,1F ,20 , etc

For x1234 is:-
4
+ 3 * 16
+ 2 * 16 * 16
+ 1 * 16 * 16 * 16

With normal counting (decimal) 1234 would be (for example):-
4
+ 3 * 10
+ 2 * 10 * 10
+ 1 * 10 * 10 * 10

Does that make sense?

Computers count in binary (ie base 2) in muliples of 8 bits normally. The maxmum value of 8 bits in binary is 11111111 which is 256 (ie, 1*1 + 1*2 + 1*4 + 1*8 + 1*16 + 1*32 + 1*64 + 1*128), which is xFF. Because of this binary and hex go together quite well, so people who progfram computers tend to get quite good at converting between them

Ooooh, i remember Hex from A-level Puting. Could do it in my head along with binary. Think I killed most of that part of my brain with excessive alcohol.
