Do i buy wraps to support my wrists?
I sprained my right when in session, it feels up for it again now but don't want a repeat.

Might be a silly question, but what exactly do you get from a skipping rope?
I watch them train and don't see the point other than speed and balance. Is it worth me getting one, i don't want to box for real... ____________________ Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.

CV and stamina, helps your footwork too.
And I wouldn't box without wraps, you could do damage (& it hurts). ____________________ CBR125|||GSXR400|||CBR400|||CBR400|||CB250RS|||GSXR750|||CB250RS

Dude you should of got wraps right at the beginning. Didnt we already discuss this? If you hit harder than a small kid,i.e the age of 4+ then you should wear wraps. (This isnt a scientific fact btw, just trying to make a point .) But yes, wraps are important, and you will feel a difference. |

Good man. You will notice a difference, and also feel like you can hit 'harder',and you probbably will anyway due to having the support to do so. Make sure you wrap up properly though,as bad wrapped hands can cause as much damage as no wraps at all. When i used to train at home last summer,id bang away at the bag with no wraps just bag gloves for time, about 2/3 hours, and afterwards my hands would be cut up to the extent that they would bleed and be real real sore. Not good. |

Don't you find that when you wear the wraps, you feel like a kung-fu master?
The same thing with owning lots of tools for the bike, you feel like a master mechanic even though you are shite. |

but isn't it like the principle of Karate ie you strengthen your wrists harden your fists to hit harder , etc?.
I remember being a child learning Karate and never getting past green belt, the horrendous pressups on your wrists , the pressups on knuckles I can deal with,
single arm pressups I can deal with , but on the wrists no.
But I think Karate is pants anyway, after watching a so called expert get beaten by a guy who was master of Fuk yu (mike myers so I married an axe murderer) ie head butting and kicking while they are prone on the ground , an excellent alledged Scottish martial arts system. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. | Quote: | The first question would be what on earth is a "real punch up"? |
Well its not one of those make believe Jiu Jitsu scenarios when 15 baseball bat wielding guys attack you using the classic 'pyscho' over head stroke.
In a real punch up, one punch can floor/kill someone, anything mobile becomes a weapon, kerbs break bones and people can get savagedly hurt unlike in a sporting arena where safety is 99% assured(alongside things like being civil, respect, sportmanship and humanity).
More often than not, from my experience, many MA teachers have never experienced real brutal fighting so are ill prepared to comment on the value of a strong wrist when they can't fight themselves.
Chris is largely correct, a proper punch shouldn't damage your wrist, but after a period of time fatigue will see your technique become sloppy and that's when you'll injure your wrist, regardless of how good your technique is when you non fatigued. |

Right i'll give you the most important advice about punching i've EVER received.
Kind of hard to explain over a comp, but if you look at the way your knuckles line up it looks like it curves (when your hand is a fist) or the middle finger knuckle sticks out.
Now i dont know how normal mine are cos ive flattened my knuckles over the years on inanimate onjects but my left side still sticks out fairly well.
If you try and lay something flat across your knuckles (card, cd case whatever) it wont.
BUT
Hold it flat over your index and middle finger knuckles, and you see the other two knuckles go at an angle.
These two (ind. + mid.) are the two you hit with.
And your arm position when you punch (with the possible exception of ranged hooks but thats one reason i dislike them) should have a dead straight line from middle finger knuckle, through wrist to elbow.
Try it out. Make a fist and smack your knuckles with the other hand straight down. It kind of locks your wrist in place.
And yeh wraps are fun, but they take AGES to put on right and ive never got the skill yet to do it tight around both knuckles and wrist.
Besides which its good to use bare knuckle to get them used to it, unless you have some heavy boxing gloves which gets your hand speed up (too many people train bare handed and then put on glvoes and get a low guard etc).
And skipping is very addictive once you get ok at it. I prefer doing it barefoot but then im odd. If i do it in trainers for some reason i get a bad back
However if you do boxing training (or intend to) try and learn to skip like you are jogging. Same kind of action/rythm as a gym cross trainer. Eventually they get you sprinting doing it and stuff. ____________________ China traffic/travel bike vid - When I make a sweeping statement, please add the word 'statistically' in to the sentence before you bitch...

Thanks for the advice, i think i really need to be careful really as im not used to hitting something so hard with such force. I was black belt in Karate so i know how to throw a punch, kinda hit it on a wonk. ____________________ Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.

Not to disregard bonny_ricardo as I also punch like that too sometime. Theres all sorts of ways you can punch. Its different principle to karate or boxing but cant go wrong to give it a try to see if it works for you.
Another way you might want to play with is to punch with the bottom three knuckles on your hand with the knuckles perpendicular to the ground. Do it with a relaxed hand/arms, keep your elbows tucked in and imagine the punch is travelling through your elbows, only clenching/tensing your knuckle at the very last moment (you might also find you can hit for longer if you relax). Aim for several inches behind the target. I find this gives you more surface area when contacting and generally between half an inch to an inch of additional reach. You can kind of whip the bottom knuckle up at the end for abit more power too.
If you want you can string several relaxed punches like that in quick succession whilst advancing and controlling your balance and you have something similar to a machine gun effect...
With hooking its nice habit to keep the knuckles perpendicular to the floor also (so you face your palm) this way you dont run the risk of if you slightly miss your opponent/punchbag and break your little finger on something (wont take much if you catch it).
Also this might sound abit stupid but is worth a try, instead of punching, try using your palms in almost a slap type of fashion. Loosely hold your fingers close together with a bit of a cup in your palm as if holding something delicate. Relax and spring your arms out like a whip (you can do this from any punching position.) On impact your fingers will naturally straighten out abit and your palm will make contact with the bag. The advantages of this is that you can slap for longer than you can punch as your palms are more flexible and will mould to whatever surface you make contact with and you'll have less chance of injuring yourself. If your hand happens to land in someones face theres potential for a stray finger to take an eye out... on the side of the head? the cup of air in your palm might even take an eardrum too if you land it correctly...
This is known as Gmans legendary hundred hand slap...
You could also claw away at your opponent once you've made contact with either punching or slapping...
Think how you swing a tennis racquet or whip, you can apply similar idea/mechanics to a punch or slap to up the power quite abit. Keeping relaxed all the way through also means you can change direction quickly and move alot more fluidly. ____________________ I kills hondas
