Me and one guy from my work go to work by bikes - me RS125 and he 125cc scooter. We both park at the same car park. Two days ago we both worked till late night. Luckily I decided around 6pm to ride home for my lunch break and come back to work by my wife's car (she's back from her work at 5pm).

After work my colleague's bike was gone. No chain left or anything.. looked like his bike was never there. He had £80 bike chain Oxford me thinks. I use 2 chains but worse quality than his 1. I felt so relieved that it was not my bike stolen.. But now I'm scared to go to work by bike. I won't go until I get proper lock but I still don't think it's going to make a huge difference.

I ordered Almax today. The thieves were prepared with tools and somehow I feel that thieves were rather after my bike than his Sad

A chain will not stop a serious thief though.

Bad news.
Was the bike chained to anything?
Sounds to me like it's just been picked up and put in a van.

In which case the same could happen to yours.

I know hindsight is wonderful but one trick you could have done is chain the bikes together.

They probably just picked it up and dropped it in a transit.

You can have the best chain in the world but if its not attached to something solid then your wasting your money.

An Almax will stop them from using a bolt cropper though, their only choice would be an angle grinder which isn't exactly quiet.

Depends wether or not they're using a van. A chain will stop kids and that's about it.

It was chained to a steel pole Confused

Well.. by buying a good quality chain I make it harder for thieves to steal it. So if my bike gets nicked at least I'll know that it was by "serious" thief not by casual one.

Was the bike stolen?

I seem to be missing the bit where you tell us that the 'friend' claims that the bike has gone without him knowing. Just because you return to find nothing then its like 2+2 without all the facts.

Idea Question

Facts?

The guy leaves his bike in the car park - goes to work - finishes his work - goes out to the car park and bike is not waiting where he left it.

Should I type simple phrases for you so you can understand Wink

Ok, you went home by bike and returned by car.

Did he say the bike was stolen?

You left and came back by other means could he have gone early or was he there when you returned, did he already know that the bike was gone or did you be the one that pointed it out?

Did he move it somewhere else in the meanwhile in an attempt to hide it from sight?

Have you spoken to this bloke again in the last 2 days since the story happened to clarify that the bike was stolen?

Were the police called and asked you for a statement?

As Flip mentioned, if they want it they will have it. A chain will only stop them from wheeling it away.

Ok.. to make it clear..

We both came to work at the same time and I could see him leaving his bike in the car park.

After work I went to my car and he to his bike.. His bike was not there what I could see myself.. He and the security guy were both chatting in the place where his bike was suppesed to be.. Then they both went back inside the building. I didn't wait because it was 11pm and I was tired and just drove home.

I had a chat with both the security guy and the owner of the bike today. The bike was insured. I asked what chain he had, he said it was proper motorbike chain for £80 from local shop. In our local bike shop they sell only Oxfords so I assumed it must have been one.

EDIT: And he's not my friend.. I just had short chats with the guy a few times.. about bikes/riding in this wheather etc. I don't know his name. We work in different departments. He seems to be a nice guy - scottisch accent, always smiling.. even today he seemed not to be very bothered by the fact that his bike was just nicked.

200kg for arguments sake.

Thats the weight of 2 fat people so not a lot of weight with another person guiding it into a van from the inside.

just out of curiosity, have you ever gone to drive off in the car with the bike still chained to it?

i had a bike stolen last september from a garage this was chained to two anchor points in the floor the crime scene examiner took the locks away these were expensive high tensile steel came back and said they were cut with hydraulic bolt cutters. on cctv there were seven blokes seen pushing the bike away this tells me if they want it they will take it. i now have an alarm that will deafen any one who goes in the garage with out disarming it bikes are all chained together and a 4ton van parked against the garage door with a wheel clamp on. if they want it they will take it all you can do is slow them down.

i can carry 130kg, i cant pick it off the floor and carry it though, i can carry 5 bags of cement and there 25 kg a bag, 2 on the left shoulder and 3 on the right, i could probably do 3 on each but my left half is wank and would give out before too long.

If I had to live like that I wouldn't bother keeping a bike. Really takes the fun out of it.

I have witness' to me dead lifting the GB250, thats 130kg and I am not a big lad so I'd be shocked if most people couldn't.

As said above you can't stop a serious thief that wants your bike, only slow them down and cause them so much trouble that they decide to go after something easier instead.

It's not the chain. It's how you use it.

I was able to keep my Hornet safe from prying eyes and thieves when it had to be secured to a lamp post between Princes Risborough and High Wycombe on the main road. Hundreds and hundreds of people pass the spot every day. I couldn't move it anywhere to hide it. So I jut used the pole there. I used an Oxford monster, a bicycle U lock, and a bycicle kryptonite flex thing.

I used all those to wrap the entire frame of the bike (form the rear wheel, to the front of the frame, including the forks. Also used a disc lock on the front brakes Laughing

There were several marks on said items when I went to pick the bike up a week later. But you couldn't even move the bike. Couldn't move the chains around and it took me a good 5 minutes to remove everything and having the keys for it! Bolt croppers couldn't be used as they need leverage and actually get around the chain. Which they couldn't.

Were you using Almax stuff when that happened? If not what chains/padlocks were you using?

I consider buying an alarm for my RS.

Btw.. Is it better to leave a bike in places full of people (so many thieves can spot them as well) or try to hide it in places where hardly anyone passes by (so hopefully no thieves will see it)? Atm I leave it in busy carparks, but at night obviously they are not that busy. I'm not going to leave it at night anymore.

I'd say it's better to leave it in a busy place.

But the general thinking of the uk population is "well it doesn't affect me so why bother?"

Too many of those selfish dickheads Middle Finger

A long time ago I used to park at a bike parking area in High Wycombe in a car park. Parked next to a brand new ducati monster that had done 500 miles. And the key was left on the bike!

I took the key and left a note plus my phone number and I took note of the registration number. Told the person to give me a call/text when they see this message as I had the key.

Got a call about 4 hours later asking about it. Met up with them and they thanked me so much! Anyone could've easily taken the bike, and even if she had TPFT insurance she wouldn't have been able to claim Thumbs Down

the problem is if they really want it they will take it most bike are at risk ebays a big problem people selling stolen bikes and parts the price of scrap. bike breakers . a friend had a gsxr stolen a few years ago chained to a post all that was left was a chain cut in half that had been cut with a disc cutter the best thing is a good alarm but they can still cut locks of chuck it in the back of a van with the alarm sounding and drive off it takes seconds my brothers a fabricator /welder and he says that you can cut any bike lock and chain if not they would guarantee there products i have got the strongest chain he could get and use site safe padlocks thats the best combination i could find i have tried cutting this my self it is possible but would make a lot of noise and bolt croppers dont work so i feel a bit safer if i park my bike any where i always make sure its busy with lots of street lights as for lifting bikes i can lift a 250 that weighs over 100kg into the back of a van no problems so two people big bike easy
