Just looking for options of bikes for when im 17 in feb, going to the bike show at NEC and 'm looking at around the 250cc range. I'm just wondering what their like? performance wise as well, im liking the Ninja 250r. What would a 250 top at?

Also i don't need to be convinced into a bigger bike Smile I'm not doing motorway commutes and will rarely go on motorways so fuel economy + fun it is....although the vfr and cbr 400's are rather tasty Razz

Thanks, Jack

The only 250 that's even remotely sporty that you will easily be able to get a hold of is the Kawasaki Ninja 250R. Anything else will either be rare or old (or a 2stroke, which you don't want on a restricted license..).

400's are a much cheaper option than a brand new bike though.

tbh do you test restrict a 600 be careful you should be fine. moneys not that much an issue...

its just the moral issues.

Thats kind of a stupid thing to say.

I dream of paying 130 quid a year.

Maybe in 5 years I can pay that.

He's 17 he will be lucky if he gets it for 800 a year Laughing

Yeah i'll keep it under the restriction, i don't see the need in risking it getting impounded/losing my licence.

I was looking at 600's but their a lot to insure and it's going to cost me a bomb on petrol. I think a 400 would be good, im going to college on it through all weather and want something to go out on a hoon for the weekends. I guess 400 would probably be the most approriate, but im not really sure.

Thanks, Jack

get some quotes to look at insurance costs i dont think they will be that far out.

www.gocompare.com

try an SV vs The kwakka you want.

i have found that different bikes have given different prices. My geeperz insurance was 700+ whilst the SV was 650 and an er5 1200 XD

ill do it just for the fun of it. Thumbs Up

I got quoted 884 pound for a 2007 ZXR250 which i think is the one you will want.

Whilst a 2002 SV only costs me 650 odd. OOOOOOOOOOOO.o

I was looking at the CBR250 - they seem to be relatively expensive for such old bikes but I think they're really cool. The engine is a complete screamer (19k redline) so I doubt the fuel economy is that good tbh. I got an insurance quote for about £300 TPO, I'm 20 with no NCB.

Why, all i was pointing out is that ins seem to rate these bikes quite high risk wise.
Lets face it why should a 250 cost more to insure than a 600 when the 600 is far faster, more expensive to repair etc.
These bikes were ins'ed back to back.
Main point is OP may find that he could ins a lager bike for less.

You never know. Mr. Green

The 400 looks like the best option, but they are all really sporty riding positions. I prefer more upright as ones with a real sporty riding position will hurt my back after a while. (always been prone to back ache).

Also im not really sure what to look for in 400's, a gap in any sort of knowledge with them.

Yeah agreed. They are all sporty sport sportsters.

You could always get a Er-5 will probably be slower than one of the 400's and cheaper. Less imposing definitely.

=]

is you really that scared?

Thumbs Up

I'm not scared! but er-5's are tacky pices of shite (no offence to any that have one) Smile

I really need a reliable bike, and i want a fairly good looking one aswell. I like the 400's it's just the riding position, im a fan of the naked bikes like hornets, bandits etc.

My bike is a 400, has a nice upright seating, has done me well on 100 mile trips, can use it on the motorway no problem.

Look for a Honda Cb400 it's got a pretty revvy engine and is basically awesome, would reccomend it to anyone as a first big bike, as it gives you confidence, without having too much power to make you fear it, but just enough so that you don't get bored/cocky!

I never get why people say the insurance on 600s is cheaper than 400s.

For example I've been quoted by several companies TPO on a bandit 4 for £225, yet I cannot get a quote lower than £450 for a bandit 6. Same with sports bikes - GSXR400 is about £325, 600 SRAD is no lower than £700.

Why not? Confused

I've got quotes, 400 came out cheapst, followed by a 600 then the 250's were most expensive! Surprised

I'd like a 400, just finding a nice cond' one for a good price aswell. I guess i better get through winter first, and really start looking around in january. Hopefully the bike show will pop up some new infusions into the biking world Smile

Thanks for all the help,
Jack Thumbs Up

Don't know whereabouts you're located but there's an '89 GSXR400 in Salisbury going cheap on ebay at the moment. It's got no MOT but it's only £300 with about a day to go. I'd try for it myself if I weren't already bidding on a Honda Spada 250.

Strange that you're finding sports 250 insurance expensive - when I got quotes it was pretty much the same (slightly less in fact) than sports 400s.

Actually there are Hyosung 250's. Either the naked version or the fully faired. My friend has the fully faired model in black and it's on an '06 reg. He got it for £1550 too with 6k miles. V-twin engine and has 28BHP so no need to restrict it either. Had a higher top end than my restricted Hornet to and the mileage per tank is good.

When I checked for a quote on that with the same things as on my Hornet it was 400 instead of 550 which is my Hornet.

It's also cheaper to insure than my friends NC30 '92.
