Is anyone out there familiar with SAP the Business Planning & Control System. I've had my first week trying to get to grips with the fundamentals with this. I'm absoloutley overwhelmed with the thoudands of Transaction caodes and the general terminology.

I work for Honeywell who are embarking on conversion to SAP globally and I'm like a rabbit in the headlights at the moment. I am having to spens time away from the family to spend most of November and all of December at Honeywells centre of excellence in Bracknell.

I can't sleep in strange hotel rooms either.

Feelong depressed about the whole thing.

My experience from using both on computers and handheld devices are it's reliable but very slow.

I've known it to go down once maybe twice in 14 months.

Only problem is it's slow as hell on a monday morning, your better off doing paper work,

We have the sap system and it causes nothing but grief for all the external engineers.
We have lost a lot of good engineers who have gone with major stress problems because of it.
Our northen office use it as well but the admin up there check what it is doing and alter it so it keeps the pressure off engineers

Have used it for the last 3 years or so, for 2 different companies. Its not as complicated as you think, the key is to just learn what is relevent to you and what you will use in a daily basis, ignore the rest.

First thing to do is set your favorites list to the stuff you will actually use then rename them all so you actually know what they are Wink

I work in R&D and will be responsible for creating material masters and BOMs', pretty straight forward but when it comes to maintaining BOMs via the SAP Change Control and knowing its effect not only on stock control but routings, ordering etc that I find things are more complicated than our current MRP system.

Do change numbers have to applied when going through Prototype, pilot(S), pre-production and productions life cycles?

Its going through and trying to appreciate the knock on effect with production control and planning than I am being bamboozled with.

I have started to compile my favourites - so hopefully things will click into place soon enough no doubt.
Thanks for the comments BTW.

Yeah SAP is a pain in the arse. Know how you feel. Just try not to leave long periods between usages.

Ours has engineers flying in all directions giving work out where it feels like may have one engineer live 500 yards from a customer but sends an engineer from 60 miles away and sends local guy 60 miles in another direction. Basically its a waste of a very expensive resource but the sales guys sell it as a succesful system when it is full of major holes.
We have at least 10 engineers a month off with stress related illness caused by the administrators who think the system is brilliant being inflexible
For October my average daily driving was 228 miles a day with an average of 4.92 jobs a day. A lot of driving when you consider it is all over Lake District
