I must admit to cutting them short if turning right, but may this be perceived as going the wrong way round if seen by PC Plod?

I always cut them short if its quiet, if i'm going straight on i'd usually ride straight over them too, it was ok on the 50, but everytime i try it on the Hornet i seem to get airborne. Laughing

Slippy bumps in the road. Wink

Good for doing a quick burnout to fill an area with that beautiful smell.

Actually it depends on how hard your riding.

If your going for it just hit it and hope it doesn't mess you up. If your pootling depending on weather hit it or go around it.

I usually ride straight over them. But when I was on the XL125 in maidstone one night, I went to go straight over one, and it was edged with bricks set about 5 inch from the tarmac! Shocked

So nearly binned it.

Since then I go round! Laughing

Will go over it if there's no other traffic, otherwise I'll go round it like on my test. Another reason to go around it properly is if it's wet.

Don't quote me, but a friend of a friend of the seretary of the local police chief heard whilst knelt under his desk Embarassed that if the mini roundabouts are just painted on the road you can drive/ride over them same as any white line, if they are raised (domed) you should go round them.

No idea if that is a total myth or true.

Solid white paint on the road is a no-cross zone. The law states that, unless your vehicle prohibits it (lorries etc) then you MUST go round even the white painted roundabouts.

It is endorsable too, although I've not heard of anyone getting 3 points for doing so.

I also go round them, if some twat knocks you off while you're going straight over, even if it's not your fault, you don't have a leg to stand on.

Cheers

The whole idea of mini-roundabouts is that larger vehicles can cross over the top of them because they have to (usually due to limited space).
So it's reasonable to not go right around like a tit especially if it looks greasy and dangerous - the main principle is that you still give way to traffic from your right just like a proper roundabout.

They were originaly intended for larger vehicls who cannot negotiate a conventional roundabout, hence the reason why some of them are painted rather than raised.

If it is a raised roundabout, you must go around them unless you are driving a vehicle where it is physically impossible to negotiate without going over it.

In the case of painted roundabout, provided you do not travel the wrong side of the blob of paint, then there is no issue, so for example driving or riding straight over is not an offence unless !!!!! Arrows in the carriageway direct you to do so.

The way to look at it is that they paint was put down or a reason, that is the local authority want to free up traffic and in ost cases mini roundabouts do this.

When negotiating a roundabout, your priority is dealing with the hazard not worrying if you have clipped some paint, and that is why it is painted because it is expected that traffic will drive over it.

And as has already been mentioned be aware that the roundabout paint can be quite slippery.

Depends if you mean a mini roundabout, or a paint-spot on the road.

if there's a raised profile to it, then I go around it as best I can.

If it's a flat painted circle, that doesn't have a profile, then I take that to indicate rights of way, more than requiring you to actually right right around it.

Isnt the general deal with them, red paint bikes cant enter the red painted bit, but cars and bigger can
The white bit, cars and under cant go over it, but buses and larger can

Most mini roundabouts have red and white paint on them, that was what i was told anyway, not sure how true it is.

I normally go round them properly as i am still learning so dont want to get into too many bad habits before my test is over and done with.

Never seen a mini roundabout with red paint on it. Confused

Seen bigger roundabouts with red cobbles on them though, apparently that's for lorries, but I still go over them anyway, I'm not sure if the highway code mentions them or not.

Cut it short, unless it's wet. Then I'll go around to avoid the paint.

I googled mini roundabouts and came up with this, aimed at learner drivers;

Mini Roundabouts
roundabout

# Approach these in the same way as a normal roundabout, but remember there is less space and time to signal and manoeuvre.
# Vehicles coming towards you, they may want to turn right.
# Be sure any vehicle on the roundabout is going to leave before you join the roundabout yourself.
# Be aware of drivers that are using it for a 'U turn'
# All vehicles MUST pass round the central markings except large vehicles which are physically incapable of doing so.
# When turning right at a mini roundabout, you don't always have time to signal, but remember to check left mirror

Multiple Mini roundabouts. At some complex junctions, there may be a series of mini-roundabouts at the intersections. Treat each roundabout separately and give way to traffic from the right.
When negotiating a number of junctions within a short distance of each other, choose a lane that puts you in the correct position for the next one.

In all cases watch out for and give plenty of room to
# pedestrians who may be crossing the approach and exit roads
# traffic crossing in front of you on the roundabout, especially vehicles intending to leave by the next exit
# traffic which may be straddling lanes or positioned incorrectly
# motorcyclists
# cyclists and horse riders who may stay in the left-hand lane and signal right if they intend to continue round the roundabout
# long vehicles (including those towing trailers) which might have to take a different course approaching or on the roundabout because of their length. Watch out for their signals.
