Hey folks.

Here's the story: On Sunday night someone tried to pinch my bike, they removed the security chain from around the front forks, cut the ignition cable and bent the steering lock pin slightly. Other than that no damage, it's all fixed now.

The thing is, I put a note on the two other bikes warning the owners that this had happened and that they might want to park their bikes where they can be overlooked for a while.

In speaking to one of the bikers (Yellow VFR guy) I told him that it had happened sometime over Sunday night/Monday morning. He said he'd been around at about midnight and saw two suspicious types in a car parked near the bike (Make/model and last 3 letters of the plate supplied.) He said when he eyeballed them they looked 'startled.'

Now for the second bit. I've been advertising the bike for sale online, I only had one note of interest. He arranged to view the bike last week but called it off citing work as the reason, he then got back i touch (via email) to arrange to see it again; this was to happen at 1pm on Sunday, I received another message saying he couldn't make that either....

I have this guys email address which I subsequently googled & yahoo'd. Two adverts come up on gumtree for rooms to let, (post code supplied.) I don't have the exact address, just the street. (I also got his mob phone number from the property ads.)

Here are my questions: Arrow Can anyone think of a way to get the rest of the car's details with the info I have? Arrow I could do a sasines search on the flat (to get the owners details) but I need to know the exact address for it. (I doubt he lives there himself, although an electoral check might confirm/rule this out.) Anyone think of a decent pretext to use? (The rooms have been let, tried that one Thumbs Up )

Basically: Arrow If I can link that car to him then I have my man. Equally (and most probably) if not then I can rule him out.

I'm pissed off about it, but these things happen. More over, I love a mystery and the satisfaction of solving it. The info would most probably go to the police. (I'm a passive aggressive
Thumbs Up)

Thanks in advance.

Assuming you reported the attempt to the police pass them then details, inc the guy who has been in contact re buying the bike.
As you say it could be gen, but then again in that case he wont have anything to hide.

What evidence is there that links him to the attempted theft? And what are you going to do if you get his address?

I see his point. Although he can do nothing about it, it`s still nice to know. Always good to know more than people think. Wink

And if the bike does go missing soon, could be worth sharpish visit to his street, see whats around.

There is no evidence linking him to the theft, only that he arranged to view the bike twice but on both ocassions cancelled. Also, the attempted theft was made sometime after 10pm on sunday night. It could be said he had no intention of looking at the bike on Sunday afternoon (as arranged,) he was merely checking it was still there.

To be honest, I don't think I'll do anything with the information. However, the satisfaction of knowing if he did or did not have anything to do with this would be gratifying.

As for giving this information to the police, realistically what would they do with it, add it to the crime file? I doubt they'd act upon it, its all circumstantial. The bike wasn't taken, I made no insurance claim, (I fixed it myself at no cost, well; some cable and an inch of solder...)

This is more of an academic excercise, I'm not particularly interested in wreaking some type of awful revenge. If indeed it was this guy, I'll just let him know that I know which should be enough to warn him off making any future attempts.

I suppose it never hurts to be abit cautious.I always wondered about people to put there cars/bikes on ebay/autotrader/gumtree.
There's nothing that stops a potential thief finding where you live, then harmlessly asking afew questions to which you reply 'I'm around after 5ish because i work during the day' or 'i wont be availible this weekend to view'. and then them coming to your house and nicking it.

Its ironic, my security set up was a £10 ebay chain and padlock, the latter might as well of been made of fruitcake; seriously crap. That's all they took.

Yet in another thread the guy had his bike indoors with several padlocks/D locks & alarms etc etc etc and the bike is a gonner.

I don't think people take theft seriously, they say: 'Ocht, its only a belonging... least you're ok...' Balls to that! Its the principle, some selfish cock end tried to deprive me/you of something you worked hard for!

Grrr and breath...

I'm ok now. Wink
