PostPosted: 13:56 - 15 Nov 2007    Post subject: learn the fecking language Reply with quote

here in Scotland it has been deemed a good idea for local workers to have courses in polish to enable communication with the ever growing invasion workforce. My belief is that if I were to go and work abroad maybe it would be polite for me to learn the language.

i did try arabic and it was pretty bad to be fair, english however we feel about it has always been the universal business language worldwide. I remember getting incredibally frustrated when a client company who had for whatever reason (which i assume was to save money) employed an eastern european receptionist who could barely string a word of english together.

After trying to get some information i needed for a permit to be applied for in order to erect scaffolding in the centre of Nottingham, I gave up and figured at some point one of their chaps would contact me to ask if it was all in place prior to them starting work then i could say no sorry we couldnt get the information from your company.

I wonder what the outcome of that was as i left the company shortly after however i did inform my director that i had been unable to do it due to the language barriers Rolling Eyes

I think I got the jist of that and no I will not be learning Polish in my country to suit the ever growing population we have of them. They should learn English. Pisses me of trying to find something in a shop or ask a question in currys etc and the sales assistant dosnt speak English!

Hahaaa! I was in Sainsbury's the other day and some woman was stood by a table jibbering at people walking by. She jibbered at me it sounded like 'doiyaarhawamekkkkchtarrrrghcahhhhhd sirrrggghhh?' I smiled and kept walking.

About 30 seconds later I'd translated it - "Do you have a Nectar card sir?"

Got nothing against ANYone, even the Welsh (well... hang on...) but when I'm in my country I expect at least to be harassed by someone speaking the Queen's English (godbless'er)

There are so many languages spoken in this country these days that the only common language IS English. Imagine a Pole speaking to a Chinaman or a Kurd speaking to a Jamacan. The only way is English.

But you have to admire those that can speak English enough to be understood. Worth giving them the time of day just for their effort.

i work at an employment agency for drivers

today a polish guy wanted to join, and i was willing to let him, but it ended up with my colleague doing the interview

apparently when faced with questions on the forms he didnt understand and had got wrong, he got cross and said that they were stupid questions.

his point of view was that he was already doing driving work for a uk company, so why should he have to be able to understand our tricky questions about routes to take to different places

a better attitude would have been that maybe he should learn a bit more english, so he wouldnt be so much worse than an english driver, or at least to accept that his english wasnt as good as it could be

there is a guy at work who is going out with a polish girl and she has been over here a while. She doesnt like the recent lot of polish immigrants as she thinks a lot are rude and arrogant and give people like her a bad name.

My Dads wifes son is married to a Polish girl.
She's a really nice girl, and I can honestly say she is here for a genuine reason.

She's fully trained to be a teacher but no one will employ her as shes apparently over educated. She works in the hospital doing some stupid job. She sends more than HALF of her money to her family every month and she is happy when she sends it.

I haven't met any of her family or even seen them for that matter, But it must be bad.
From what i've gathered about Poland you are either rich or poor, There's no inbetween.

To her, £900 a month is A LOT of money.

On the other hand, Every Friday I go to the shops just round from my house and there is always these Polish guys. They are middle aged, Drink cider and when you look at them they look back then say something in another language and laugh amongust themselves. They drive a white Polo that looks like its already been crushed and generally smell of shite.
They are also known for stealing bikes in the local area.
What is it about Polish people and bikes? I've never seen a genuine Polish person riding a bike, I am always hearing about them stealing bikes? Is it to order? Who is ordering them?

I just don't get it, I think it's extremely unfair that these scumbags can come here and get by, when genuine, willing to work Polish people are doing what can only be described as dead end jobs.

well you younguns anyway, there have been long established polish people who came over during the war and have settled here very well, its probably unfair to brand the poles as the major problem as it tends to be lithuanians and kosovans etc who are the main problem with eastern european migrants.

The somalians and other africans are causing a lot of trouble as are russian gangs and yardies from Jamaica. I believe we are being too diluted now and the fact that these people from the east will bypass most other european countries to get here to claim their benefits and cars etc says it all really.

It is laughable that the french and germans etc have border patrols, lets face it, they are going to allow the buggers through all the way to bloody felixtowe etc.

If you can't speak British fluently in Britain you shouldn't be able to work, drive a vehicle, claim state benefits or receive any welfare provision of any kind. This includes education, NHS treatment etc. If you can't ask for it in English either verbally or in writing tough. This is what other countries such as New Zealand and Australia which have high applications for visas/entry expect from people coming to their country. Why can't we have the same expectations?

This country's overcrowded enough as it is.

I was fuming a few months ago when Cheshire County Council started putting up advisory road signs in English and Polish. Mad

We got stuck for chefs at work (as 2 just walked out) so they took on the two with best experience. Both were from Czech Republic.
Now, I have no problem with other language's as most of you know my OH is Greek, and I hear a lot of Greek around me but they do there best to speak English when they can.
The language barrier at work was really rough to begin with. One could speak good enough English, the other couldnt.
As weeks went on I pretty much got fed up with listening them speaking Czech all the time when in the kitchen you need to speak to each other all the time, Or if I spoke in English telling them what to do, they would reply in Czech to each other.
I went and explained the situation to my boss and how I felt uncomfotable working with them - there reply 'Try to learn there language so you can speak back'
I was horrified TBH - I couldnt beleave they were asking me to learn something new to just get along with the chefs - they are over here to learn English better anyway. I gave my 2 pence to my boss and to be polite I mentioned if there over here to learn english, then they should learn/ try to speak to me and other staff in English & that I have no intrest in learning another language because Im English and thats it.

I live ini Sweden now. Moved in March.
Here they have a free course called Swedish for Immigrants. I do 15 hours a week at school and am slowly learning the lingo (even tho everyone here speaks english)

This is how it ought to be done in England.

It's only right to learn the language where you live. In fact it's downright rude not to. And for certain jobs it should be mandatory.

However, to suggest ALL jobs, or welfare, and medical treatment be withheld is downright crass, and lacking in ANY social responsibility or morals.

We here should do what the Dutch do.
Quote:
Under the new law, any Dutch national of Pakistani origin will only be permitted to send for family members (with a view to settling in Holland) provided that they learn Dutch prior to immigration application. Similarly, any Pakistani wishing to immigrate to the Netherlands will be required to take a language proficiency test at the Dutch Embassy in Islamabad. Anyone failing the test will automatically be denied the right to apply for immigration.

This goes for all immigrants also.

I'm tired of hearing this type of pc talk, especially from someone who doesn't even live in the Uk anymore.

I look at the amount of tax I pay every year. It grieves me that a significant amount is spent on child benefit paid to EU nationals whose children do not even live in the UK, huge amounts of money every year (and increasing) on translation costs for many languages etc etc.

I am and always have been a great believer in the welfare state but for British people. Go to Eastern Europe, Asia or Africa and see what welfare benefits you can get ie none, whether you speak their langauge or not. How many people can we take into the Uk who work only for the minimum wage with our amazing welfare state system?

The language problem is only the tip of the iceberg concerning how tired I am of being told how we need migrant workers in the Uk when we have increasing native unemployment, expected to learn their language as per Louise, falling standards of living and an expectation that we should work all hours day or night, weekends and bank holidays for the minimum wage. And be grateful for it as the Eastern Europeans tug their forelocks.

I don't really understand this post. Not sure it was particularly OTT pc?
I absolutely agree that if you move to another country, then you should learn the language. That goes as much for the Brits retiring to Spain as anyone who moves to Britain.
As for the numbers and control, thats another argument entirely.

Okay mate maybe I was a bit quick with the pc reference. Perhaps I'm a bit sensitive about this. It's just that I get tired of hearing the Uk media, Government and institutions such as the CBI constantly defending and advocating economic migration to the UK without considering it's wider social implications for British people.

No offence was intended to you.

Speaking English in the Uk workplace is important. I work on building sites and have seen people seriously injured due to this language problem. There are issues concerning. Health and safety, effective worker co operation (and customer service in some jobs).

health and safety is a big worry, a case in point, a friend of mine is a site manager and had to give the safety induction to a group of new workers fro an agency, several of them were foreign and they had an interpreter with them. Understandably, my friend refused them to work on her site as the implications of a translator on standby was laughable.

I also had a situation where in the space of 45 minutes i had 25 eastern europeans phone looking for scaffolding work, none of them had any scaffolding experience, only half of them could drive and none of them had a licence, the standard of english at best was very poor and i believe they were all sat in the same office with a crib sheet and company phone numbers.

It makes sense that companies will take the cheaper option when available, coupled with the general consensus that brits are lazy, cheap foreign labour makes sense, however for those brits who are fighting a losing battel against such odds nowadays so you think they will get the same kind of benefits when unable to find a company to take them on and pay them more per hour?

I went into dominos pizza the other week and ordered, when i popped back in to pick it up, i asked the guy whod handed me my pizza if they had any salt, he couldnt understand a word i was saying, surely in a job where you are dealing with the public you should at least be able to string one english sentence together!!!
