errr...... loads of stuff
IF the weathers not *too* bad I might be able to follow you around a bit at the weekend to give you some pointers.... assuming I can actually remember anything that is
It's probably worth getting someone to write down the sequence you're supposed to do checks and practicing them religiously.... though different training companies do it differently anyway |

Yeah, I've got the book etc.
I've looked through it, and as long as i'm ok on road position etc, and checking all the right times, I should be OK.
I havnt had any lessons yet
Lots of reading, and practise going to be done this weekend
G: you going to Hook meet tomorrow if weather isnt bad? |

I think that the most basic tip is to exaggerate all of your checks/movements, so that the examiner doesn't have an excuse to assume that you haven't done 'em.
Also, keep tabs on your road position, and your distance from traffic ahead of you.
Another thing is to not rely totally on engine braking when slowing down for a maneouvre (such as turning), so even if you're confident of slowing down enough, just touch the brakes enough to switch the light on.
There's probably more stuff, but I can't think of them right now ____________________ TiN

You know cars have 6 point check when pulling away etc, is there anything like that on bikes?
Also, will the notice/ mind if I don't put into neutral at lights etc?
Thanks for all the tips, I would give karma, but hey, i cant
Its at 8.40am, so hopefully I will be sitting in traffic for most of it, which is better than riding etc etc Just make sure I dont filter, or jump through any amber lights, or loss the instructor |

You must do a shoulder check before moving off. Even if you're only moving a couple of feet (eg inching along at the lights). When you're doing your manouvres, it should be exaggerated (turning right round, right hand on the seat behind you) to say "i'm really being very sure there is nothing coming before proceeding to do my U-turn in the road".
The neutral thing doesnt matter - they're not close enough to see and don't appear to care.
Oh, and on your U-turn, you have to walk the bike round 1 U then ride it round the 2nd U - so make sure when you pull over and he's coming along to explain the manouvre to you that you take a good look at the camber of the road! Don't wanna drop it while pushing, do you
Main thing is to do everything safely - they'll forgive things that are down to inexperience, but not things that they consider dangerous. So if you get into trouble, get out of it safely with all the checks, and you might get away with it. |

stephen...i would advise against doing your test on your nsr.........as U turns could be a problem. ____________________ Bikes owned :- 2001 nsr125, 1999 zx6r, 2006 yzf-r1, 2009 xmax 250, 2012 yzf-r1, 2015 MT-07

I would say that good throttle, clutch, and perhaps rear brake control is more important than the type/model of bike for a u-turn. Just remember to watch where you want to go, and not where you are going...it's all too easy to stare at the curb, and get a little too close for comfort. ____________________ TiN

As G said, I dont have a lot of choice about doing it on my bike. I am sorta OK at U turns, I practise them most rides, and will be a lot at the weekend.
And i know if i fail it will cost, but it should be less than lessons etc etc.
Thanks for tips TiN |

When I was having lessons for my test I managed several U turns on my NSR...
My best tip for the U turn, is to focus on the middle of the road behind you, some distance away. Though sometimes the examiners are really helpful and actually stand in the road a couple of feet away from the curb. If this is the case, then look the examiner straight in the face and this action will pull your arms to a good enough position to get you round.
Also, difficult one - but relax! You'll ride a whole lot better if you're not nervous.
I was also advised to make sure you really DO reach the speed limits - preferable as quickly as possible. The examiners know their bikes, and know how an NSR should perform and will enjoy having to have a *bit* of a thrash to keep up with rather than getting bored. After they're bikers too!
Bit long eh? Sorry! ____________________ Avast! Pirates ahoy!

yeah make a point of speed limits, they are major important in the modern test
dont exceed under any circumstances, but have a good reason for not being dead on it for example, dual carriage way, get to the limit and sit at it
if its a residential road with tight turns and lots of parked cars, use your best judgement, normally 20mph or so
however if there is no cars and no sharp turns, get up to 30, it takes practice but just make sure you know the limits and you can show ability to evalutate a situation and reach the suitable limit as quick and safe as possible, things like this is why its good to have at least 1 or 2 lessons ____________________ So in other words, he stopped you for being flagrantly in posession of a motorcycle in direct contravention of the Hippies, Darkies and People Whose Face I Don't Like The Look of (Police Powers) Act. 1976 |

Emergency stops are worth practising as well, especially in the wet, incase it is wet when you do your test.... a skid's still a test fail in the wet |
