You have checked there is in fact coolant in the system right? My bike lost mine due to a loose clip while I was riding and so I got a red temp line.

I can't see a price for the water pump but if you email the people at https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk they should be able to tell you.

But yeh I'd check first that there is coolant in the bike and you haven't got a leaking pipe somewhere.

Oh and don't ride it if it's doing this, you may sieze the engine.

Another thought did you bleed the system after filling it with coolant? I'm assuming you were the last person to fill it with coolant here.

If you wanna inspect the water pump at all then you'll need to drain the coolant, also to change the head gasket you need to drain the coolant.

Have you got a copy of the manual? I recommend you take a look at it, do as alains recommends he knows the NSR inside out Razz. I guess it wouldn't hurt to look at the pump while the coolant is out.

Why not check the temperature switch first? Before tearing down the engine

didnt think of that, thou the needle moves. when i realised i drove home, found the needle would go down at lower revs but be moving reasonable speed, assume the freezing crappy english weather was enough to cool that little bit

fan? what fan?

i dont have one, bit of background, since the engine refit the bike has been running sweet as, its only a couple of weeks ago it suddenly overheated, by sudden i mean i had been riding about in the evening, put bike away, took it out next day. Halfway to friends house, red line and steam. now this was enough for me to call ahead and say im gonna be a while. let it fully cool down as i pushed the 2 min to his house, left to cool all day. rode back in the afternoon, 5 mins down the road the needle is tickling the red line. no steam, left to cool, spoke to father in law who suggested changing the stat. done and not much difference. thats where i am at the moment.

Should be a fan behind rad to draw cool air through when you are stopped.

Just because the needle moves doesnt mean to say the switch cant be faulty, BUT it could also OR be a fault with the clocks

Shouldnt be anything to do with the fan, how often this time of year does your fan come on when riding? ie when does the temp reach fan territory? especially on a low powered machine

No the NSR does not have a fan, just to clear that up. The radiator is cooled only by air flow, thats why it suffers a bit in the summer when stuck in traffic.

Steam would indicate to me there is a leak, have you looked on the top of the head for a sort of copper coloured deposits? I had this when my nsr leaked its coolant over the head.

Find the switch, there should be a wire going into it, put this wire to earth, or , remove the switch, put in water, heat the water, then using a multimater measure the resistance whilst referring to specs

Do you live in a hard water area? If so it might be a furred up rad (limescale) try running some viniger or half a calgone tablet throu your system.

Might be worth popping the water pump cover of and checking that it is engaged with the gear properly and that it is secure on the shaft.

You should never use just tapwater in your rad. For best results use distilled water with the correct antifreze mixture.

Most likely cause is either the rad, a blockage or the pump.
Do you have any cold-spots on your rad, or at the hozes either end? Does pressure and tempiture build up evenly on the rubber pipes that enter and leave the rad?

May be worth getting the whole system flushed, checked out and pressure tested.

I agree with Goat-Boy really, you should take the cooling system apart and have a good look at it, obviously after testing the switch as mentioned above.

Could lack of two-stroke (broken pump?) cause this sort of rapid heating of the engine?
