OK maybe not, doubt this'll appeal to anyone, but I thought it was kind of cool Shifty

step one, start with two algebreic terms:
a = x

step two, multiply both sides by x:
ax = x^2

step three, multiply both sides by -1:
-ax = -x^2

step four, add a^2 to both sides:
a^2-ax = a^2-x^2

step five, both sides are factorised:
a(a-x) = (a-x)(a+x)

step six, divide both sides by (a-x):
a = a+x

step seven, since a = x (step one) we can replace all instances of a with x:

x = x+x

x = 2x

1 = 2

shit I think I just broke maths, nah not quite. Theres a mistake in one of the steps.

How and why can you find maths fun.

Algebra too Sick

Sorry Kat but you must be.

I can understand the need for maths in everyday jobs like accounting etc.

But why the feck would anyone subject themselves to its worst form (algebra) for kicks is beyond me.

But then I was the rebellious type in school, the one sat at the back of the class giving the teacher the finger and calling him a w**ker when trying to teach me algebra lol

Yeah, in step 6 you divided by a-x and sice a=x, a-x must be 0

You cant divide by zero, it's not allowed! Razz

if you dont like algebra do it with numbers.
0 x 1 = 0
0 x 2 = 0

So
0 x 1 = 0 x 2
divide by zero gives:
1 = 2

Bollocks does it! Middle Finger Laughing

Because the zero's on both sides can't you just cancel it out??

I've now got wood. I couldn't stand maths at school, but when I saw a builder put this to use I saw the light.

Couple of problems there. First off, you can't divide by 0.

And if you complete the equation you end up with:

(0 x 1) = (0 x 2)

=

0 = 0

Which is correct.

I know, thats the whole idea.... the fact that you cannot divide by zero is the deliberate mistake in the original post...

from
0 x 1 = 0 x 2
Divide by Zero gives
0/0 x 1 = 0/0 x2

...which is blatantly wrong as you cant divide by zero in elementary arithmetic Wink

Girls=time x money (the two things you spend on them)

time is money (time=money)

so girls = money x money =money^2

money is the root of all evil (money=sqrt(evil))

so girls = sqrt(evil)^2
= evil

Girls are evil!

Erm... bonjour...

Seriously, I havent a clue about most of what you just said, I guess some folk just like it some dont.

I know the designers at my work place use alot of software but thats pretty piss easy to use its just a simple C.A.D program

I've got a good enough head for maths simple div,add,sub,mult but i just found the whole idea of algebra to be a nightmare and its something that will be etched upon my grave.

Algebra can be used to solve all sorts of problems in a simpler way than just using ordinary arithmetic.

Example...

Quote:
When I add 4 times Bob's age 4 years from now to 5 times Bob's age 5 years from now, I get 10 times Bob's current age. How old will Bob be 2 years from now?

This would be quite tricky to do without algebra; but using the letter A to represent Age you can easily do some maths.

Bob's age 4 years from now = Age + 4 = A+4
Bob's age 5 years from now = Age + 5 = A+5
10 times Bob's current age = 10 x Age = 10A

So
10A = 4(A+4)+5(A+5)
10A = (4xA)+(4x4)+(5xA)+(5x5)
10A = 4A+16+5A+25.............................[Remove Brackets]
10A = 4A+5A+16+25.............................[Rearrange]
10A = 9A + 41.......................................[Simplify]
10A - 9A = 9A - 9A +41 .........................[collect A terms]
A = 41

Age in two years = 43

Basically your either intrigued or bored to tears. Try this....

a-b=8
a.b=16

a=16/b

16/b -b = 8
16 -b^2 = 8b
16 = 8b+b^2
b^2+8b-16

Solve the quadratic, two possible solutions for a and b. The squares are the same, however, and the product of the squares is 96.

You don't need to solve a quadratic either:

ab = 16
ab.ab = 16.16

a-b = 8
(a-b)(a-b) = 8.8
aa -2ab +bb = 8.8

aa + bb = 8.8 +2ab
aa + bb = 64 + 2(16)
aa + bb = 96
