I've just bought myself some upgrade parts for my pc (basically a new pc!) - mobo, CPU, Ram, GPU. It's all plugged in properly, and I'm trying to do a clean install of XP. I can boot from the cd no problem, and it goes through the usual - format disk / choose install location / copying files / reboot.
It then gets to the installing windows (which I think starts at 39minutes by default) and proceeds. The trouble is that it hangs at various stages throughout this process (i've tried umpteen times). It has hung before even asking me for basic location / serial input before; it has also made it as far as saving settings (9mins iirc).

I've tried:
Using different RAM in different sockets (no effect)
Changing some BIOS options to not install e.g Sound / LAN - but it can get past the installing drivers section without disabling anything.
Loading fail safe BIOS options

It's a Q6600 processor / Abit FP-IN9 Mobo (Award BIOS) / 2GB Corsair DDR2 RAM / 8600GT GPU

Any suggestions on something else I should try?
Thanks,
Ben

I've got 2 x 1GB modules. I've tried doing it with a single stick (both, seperately) in various sockets. It doesn't seem to make any difference!

Thanks

is the CD ok? or has it been scratched/marked. no problems with the disk drive before uprgrading?
when you say 'hangs' do you mean it just freezes and you have to restart the PC?
if so, mine does this and im not sure why - it is either RAM related or air flow i have been told but not too sure. try other RAM (borrow some) and see if that helps. then you'd be able to limit the options for what could be faulty.

I've just managed to get up and running, and I can't believe how stupid the issue was! Basically, when I replaced the hardware, I also removed a hard drive as it was only 80GB - this was the hard drive that had the OS previously. Anyway, the new configuration was such that the new OS hard drive was jumper set as master (connected as master), but the cd drive was jumper set as cable select (connected as slave). I changed the hard drive jumper so it was also cable select and everything went smoothly. It appears as if both devices must either be set as master/slave or both set as cable select.
That's a new one for me at least....
