Asked my father today to put my car in for an MOT, expecting about £150 bill, yes, car has now passed, with a bill of £400, without asking me to whether to go ahead with work or not.
I have just gone back to work after 6 months on SSP (£72 a week) so money is tight. Now I have an MOT but can't afford to tax and insure it.
What a waste of money, that could have bought new tyre for the bike and a new rear disc and a respray for his tank and fairing. Bloody father has just wiped out what little money I had to last me until end of November.

Pissed off, absolutely fuming and totally broke again. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Someone with a car AND a bike complaining about being broke? Strange definition of "broke".

Yowza, that is really ungrateful.

I love this Irish phrase, "Catch yourself on".

Your dad probably did what most dads would do, sounds like he is good guy to me, you should be thankful. Some really are complete cunts.

car was declared SORN while I was off sick as I couldn't afford to renew insurance and tax and MOT it. I have no off road parking, so it is parked at my Dad's 45 miles away. Bike was already road legal when I went off work sick, all paid for!!

I asked dad to put car through MOT as his next door neighbour owns a garage, I never asked him to authorise repairs for it and never expected a bill of £400!!

I don't need to grow up, if car was on a path at my house (which I don't have) then I would have done the repairs myself as I am quite capable of doing so. Unfortunately I was unable to get to the car and take it to the garage myself as I work all week and am working weekends at the moment as well.

I am not some little kid and I have worked bloody hard to buy both the bike and the car. BTW the bike is only an old Fazer 600, so not an expensive one and car was bought second-hand!!

Im sorry, its your car,so therefore your responsibility. Be it on your property or not. Im 16,and i would have more common sence than to ask for an mot without thinking about the possibility of repair bills. Your dad sounds a good guy,and you wont realise that until one day hes not there to catch you. Although i can see your side of the tale. Take it on the chin and learn. Thumbs Up

I understand that your stressed with money I know how that feels. But i think your dad was trying to do what you asked him, which he didnt have to do in the first place and dont think he deserved to have it shoved in his face. He probably thought you needed it MOT'd and that was it so he done it. Should thank him for doing it at least. I dont think its your dads fault sorry just a bit of crap luck . Chill out things will work out.

Guilt tripping a Dad who has only done what he thought best? Guilt tripping a parent is sick. Fuck man... you'll see one day. Parents are precious.

I'd thankfully forgotten how scheming some girls are... Sick

This dad sounds like he thought he was doing his daughter a favour yes, but a bit of common sense on his behalf would have possibly prevented or at least postponed a £400 bill for her. How often do you go into a shop and take something you've never bought before to the till without looking at the price?

Perhaps he should feel a bit rotten for his daughter being so much in the red now, especially if she's been off work recently and her funds may be low. I know I would if it was me who took the car in.

Yes MOT'ing a car. How badly did she need that car? Was it her only form of transport maybe? Maybe her dad thought he was doing her a favour and getting it done because of that very one reason.
If I gave my folks my form of transport - My bike for MOT and I was expecting a £150 bill, yet it came back as £400 I wouldnt take that badly - Ok Id be skint, but they were obviously doing what I had asked them to do - which was to get it to the MOT place to be road worthy.

There is some very ungrateful , and immature people on this thread, i hope the people responsible for some of the outrageous comments read them in the light of day and feel suitably ashamed. Your parents deserve more respect.

To be fair, I can see both sides of the story.

Whilst kitty kat's dad's heart was most probably in the right place, if I had asked my dad to get my bike MOT'd for me, I would hope that he'd ring or text me saying how much it's expected to cost before they went ahead, assuming her dad knows she's struggling financially atm. If he's unaware that money's tight however, then yeah this post is unfair.

What has disturbed me most about this thread is the fact that, in response, kitty kat has indirectly been called a cvnt, and it has been proposed that all females are manipulative and scheming. Neutral

I dunno, IMO, I just think that's a little bit over the top and unnecessary.

Heres an idea; "Dad, would you take my car for MOT please? I am a bit skint at the moment so if it is going to cost more than £150 could you let me know before they do the work so I can decide if I want it done."

All you asked him to do was MOT it, thats what he did. Communication is a great thing.

Maybe your Dad thought that as you were getting ready to actually use it again? In that case he would want to make sure it was safe for you

He made the effort to get your car sorted, and at the same time did what he thought was best for you.

It can be frustrating if you are financially strapped and it causes you problems, but he did it out of love not malice. Not many strangers would have stored your car then took it for its MOT.

Holly, WTF?

£400?! What, was the fecking engine falling out of it or something? One year ago, passed it's MOT, this year it needed £400 worth of work?

Sounds like yer usual MOT rip-off.

And that's precisely why I use a dedicated MOT shop who don't even do repairs.

They have no agenda, they've nothing to gain by telling you it needs X Y and Z doing at cost of £loads.

Thats disgusting. Parents are not money banks and arnt there for to help you endless like a spoiled child through the rest of your life. Both you sound like you need to stand on your own two feet, what ages are you by the way? Anyway i dread to think what you will do when your parents are not around to do you favors and help you out, should be more grateful for them. Grow up and respect your parents and stop bitching and whining ad giving woman a bad name! Like some are making out in here through your above statement.

As a father of an 18 year old daughter, I would want her to drive a safe car. And yes I would (do) pay if she could not afford it. But not from guilt but love. Maybe I'm a soft touch but I only got one daughter.
