woe is me, after having an oil leak for ages from the front of the head gasket i decided to do something about it and replace it at long last. whilst undoing the head bolts the front right middle one was turning but not undoing you could tell it was flexing and would break under further minstrations, so we thought sod it and put it all back together with a smear of instant gasket over the front where it was leaking, yeah i know ye ha but it was the best of a bad job especially as one of the exhaust studs broke which now has two drill bits (snapped) and the front end of an easy out bit stuck in it now, its now been put back on with a generous amount of firegum on the exhaust gaskets which wernt there when we removed the system.
thing is ive just got it home after a thirty mile ride and the things pissing oil out from around the head gasket.
Ive had a word with my Dad who was helping and he thinks the leak is due to the stuck stud not being able to be tightened down properly (although the torque wrench clicked on it)
im open to suggestions but does anyone know what can be done apart from a gallon of unleaded
Im a bit gutted about this as this is my first bike since passing my test and im fond of the old thing.
apart from smothering it in instant gasket or a complete strip down to get the offending bolt out is there a simple fix?

Nope, no matter what you do its unlikely it will be perfect without stripping it all down.

Superreams are renowned for oil-leakyness. You could spend a lifetime chasing them down. I'm afraid that as Ichy said you're going to have to strip the top-end down to get anywhere and that means risking snapping the hea-bolt or tearing out the threads. I would look around for a replacement engine first-off.

Really?
News to me.
Worked on to many in my time as a mechanic and can only remember a few that ever leaked and that was normally from the rocker box because they needed a new gasket not the re-used one.

Thanks for that Laughing

Did you use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts? Guess you've got nothing to lose by giving them a proper tweak. there's a lot worse places to break a bolt, at least it won't be rusted in.

we did torque the bolts down, I think id rather have a go at getting the bolt out by giving it the big un and if it snaps then at least we can get the head off and have a go at freeing the rest of the bolt.

btw Rowey keep the faith Wink

might have to apply for a bank loan that might help decide on things

thanks for all the responses Smile

quick question someone told me to use a bead of exhaust firegum instead of instant gasket on the outside edge of the head gasket.

any thoughts?

Yes - don't listen to any more of their advice. A flat head and cylinders, and a new gasket is all that's needed for a perfect seal.
